Facial recognition to identify looters in London riots

There is a new Google Group known as "London Riots Facial Recognition" which has appeared after the bloody riots hit London the past few days. Don't worry, this group is not going to loot your online bank account, but rather, it intends to take advantage of facial recognition technologies in order to root out all the looters (where possible, of course) who have the “luxury” of appearing in online photos. The group does have a considerate streak to them – some of their threads are titled "Ethical Issues," and "Keeping Things Legal," where they intend to use only “legal sources for images." Sounds good, no.

PlayStation Vita up for pre-ordering on Amazon and Best Buy

Can't wait to get your hands on the next generation PlayStation Portable aka the PlayStation Vita. Well, the folks over at Amazon and Best Buy are now more than willing to start collecting your money for the upcoming console. It's been reported that the two major shopping outlets are now accepting pre-orders for the PlayStation Vita console that's scheduled to arrive at the end of this year (in Japan at least). Amazon has priced the console at $249.99 (WiFi-only) and $299.99 (3G + WiFi). The Vita has been given a shipping date of December 31st 2011 though there's no telling if the date has been confirmed.

LG G-Slate gets Android 3.1 Honeycomb update

The LG G-Slate from T-Mobile has certainly been lacking when it comes to the Android 3.x Honeycomb update race, considering the Motorola XOOM as well as Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 have already received the update some time back. Nice to know that T-Mobile is not going to take things easily, where they just announced the availability of an Android 3.1 Honeycomb update coming our way sometime today at best, or tomorrow if things turn south. While all these hail from LG's official support forums, there has been no official announcement from T-Mobile just yet.

Vulnerability Found In Android That Allows For Phishing Scams and Pop-up Ads

You hated them on your PC and now those annoying pop-up ads and phishing attempts could find their way into an Android device near you. This year at Defcon 19 (a hacking conference held every year in Las Vegas) a couple of researchers managed to find a vulnerability in Android that could allow for apps in the Android Market to steal a users data via phishing or by be used by advertisers to bring the most annoying idea of the 21st century, pop-up ads. Apparently, it's possible for someone to create an app that will display a fake bank app log-in page while the user is using a legitimate banking app.

Android 3.1 Update Expected to Commence ‘Today or Tomorrow' for LG G-Slate

Though it was one of the first Honeycomb tablets to hit the streets, the LG G-Slate (otherwise known as the LG Optimus Pad) has fallen to the wayside in light of other heavy hitters and competitively priced options. It doesn't mean the 8.9-inch slate has been forgotten, however. In a posting to LG's forums a moderator has announced that the update to Android 3.1 will begin rolling out either today (8x8) or tomorrow (8x9).

Standardized Specs Make 3-D TV Viewing Easier, But Not Prettier

The good news: Starting next year, the 3-D glasses you get with your 3-D TV may be compatible with displays made by other major manufacturers as well. The bad news: They're still hopelessly ugly. Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic have rallied together to support the “Full HD 3-D Glasses Initiative” and will use Xpand brand 3-D glasses for their active shutter sets starting in 2012.

“The companies intend to work together on the development and licensing of radio frequency (RF) system 3-D active glasses technology,” according to the press release.
