How It Works: Backside Vs. Frontside Illuminated Camera Sensors

By hiding the circuitry behind the pixels, a backside illuminated sensor gathers much more light. Image: Camera Technica. Friday seems like a great time to stop working, kick back with a beverage and read up on something that you have been wondering about since, like forever. So today we bring you one of the most pressing issues of the day: backside vs. frontside illuminated camera sensors.

What's the difference? In construction, not much. But in use, they're like night and day — almost literally.

Acer Introduces Aspire One Happy 2, Hopes Netbooks Still Trendy

Acer is not giving up on the netbook as it introduces the Aspire One Happy 2 for the U.S. market. The netbook, which comes in bright Skittles-like colors, features dual-core Atom N570 CPU, 250GB hard drive, 1GB of RAM, WiFi, and a 10.1-inch screen. It is strange to see that Acer is offering a “new” netbook using specs that are so two years ago and these would even be considered awful at that time. Even more strange is that the company is introducing an endangered product for $269.

SAPPHIRE EDGE-HD2 mini PC is the size of a paperback book

Looking to clear the space on your desk with a new computer that doesn't take up so much space. You could always get an all-in-one computer that takes up the foot print of your monitor. But what if you already have a nice monitor that's in perfect condition and you don't want to replace it anytime soon. Well, that's where the SAPPHIRE EDGE-HD2 comes in. Granted you don't need those conditions just to make use of a tiny computer, but it would fit the bill if you did.

After the success of its first Mini PC, SAPPHRE Technology has decided to release a sequel to the original Mini PC it released earlier this year.

Good news for iPad 2 users. Well, not that your iPad 2 can be jailbreak, no it's not, but at least developers are optimizing the apps. Ever tried Fring on your iPad 2, but saddled with an iPhone-sized interface on your 9.7-inch IPS screen. So, we're very pleased to tell you that Fring has been updated with proper iPad support (cue cheers). Basically there's no reason to use Facetime now, with its lame single-caller and WiFi only limitations.

AKG K3003 Stainless Steel In-Ear Headphones Will Cost You 1,000 Euros

If you have 1,000 Euros ($1,435) to spare, perhaps these AKG in-ear headphones is something to spend that money on. Admittedly when it comes to audio products, AKG does a pretty decent job at producing good quality devices, but for 1,000 Euros, what will you be getting yourself into. Well for starters, AKG has billed the K3003′s ”the world's smallest true 3-way supreme audio earphones,” and the stainless steel housings are reportedly handmade, which could account for the exorbitant price tag.

Bruce Wayne to drive Lamborghini Aventador in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises

Bruce Wayne has lots of toys at his disposal. Billions of dollars and Lucius Fox mean a near unlimited supply of pure awesome. Still, Wayne can't play Batman during daylight hours, so his ride has to be a tad more subtle than The Tumbler. In Batman: The Dark Night, Bruce Wayne drove a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640, which he used to save someone else's life.
We won't lie, that scene caused the room to get a little misty.

Andy Rubin: 500,000 Android Activations Daily

Half a million Android activations per day is impressive, however you look at it. According to Google's Android boss Andy Rubin, half a million new Android devices are being activated daily. Not only that, the the numbers are growing by over four percent every week. Those numbers are frankly astonishing.

Back in January, Apple announced (in a roundabout way) over 360,000 daily iOS activations, and at that time Google was seeing 300,000 activations.

Microsoft Exec Admits Xbox 360 Will Not have a Handheld Counterpart

Dennis Durkin (pictured), COO and CFO of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business (the maker of Xbox 360), expresses that the company will not be making any dedicated handheld gaming device. In an interview with Industry Gamers, he explains that the mobile gaming market is too crowded, making it extremely difficult to successfully launch Microsoft's own handheld gaming device. Durkin even compares the market to “a very, very red ocean,” with the blood of Nintendo 3DS soiling those waters, as marked with its reasonable success although its lofty expectations from fans were not reached.

Acer Cromia 700 to launch in June

Acer's Cromia 700, their first notebook which will be powered by Google's Chrome operating system, is set to roll out sometime “this month” according to some industry sources. This is an 11.6″ model that will sport Wi-Fi connectivity, where it is expected to retail for a mere $350 to make it nigh affordable for most folks. Of course, there will be a 3G model that is in the pipeline, although no definite release date for that model has been announced apart from a rather vague “summer”, at a $450 price tag.

Refrigerator Concept Lets You Keep Your Food In The Ceiling

Refrigerator Concept Lets You Keep Your Food In The Ceiling

Baiyao Lin has come up with a new smart refrigerator concept, which he dubbed the Electrolux Health Station. His design was probably inspired by the current situation that many urban apartment dwellers are facing, especially in burgeoning cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore, where apartments are not only expensive, but are also tiny due to land constraints. So instead of wasting more precious space with a refrigerator, how about a refrigerator that is built into the ceiling instead. The refrigerator is circular in design and is made up of 3 components – pre-store, main and a kit.

Motorola Wilder now available in the UK for £98.49 SIM-free, on contract from £10.66 per month

The Motorola Wilder was officially announced in the UK a few weeks ago, and we'd seen it once even before that when it first leaked going just by its model number EX130. The Wilder, if you remember, is a rugged (well, dust and splash resistant) entry-level touchscreen phone running Qualcomm's Brew platform. Back when it was unveiled, we were led to believe that it will be an exclusive to the Carphone Warehouse in the UK, but it looks like that's not the case. One thing which does seem to be exclusive to Carphone Warehouse is the £49.95 price for which the retailer will sell it once it launches in next month.

Tell The Time With This Faceless Watch

Tell The Time With This Faceless Watch

Watches are an essential accessory in our everyday lives. Not only do they help tell the time and date, watches can also help to create an image, so for example if you are a high flying CEO, a watch like Patek or Rolex will definitely say something about who you are and the kind of job that you do. Watches like Casio's G-Shock probably indicates that you're more about street fashion, or perhaps you're just an athlete who wants a rugged watch that won't get damaged when dropped. So, what does the Faceless Watch say about you.

AMP Video Camera Shoots Real-Time HDR Movies

AMP Video Camera Shoots Real-Time HDR Movies

The utilitarian AMP II camera can capture a huge 20 stops of dynamic range. Great news, at least for filmmakers who like the candy-colored, eye-searing effects of HDR photography. The AMP II is a triple-sensor camera which will shoot high dynamic range video in real time.
In principle, the AMP II works like a high-tech Technicolor rig. The light coming through the lens is split into three beams and each is sent to a different image sensor. These sensors record highlights, mid-tones and shadows, and the three outputs are combined to make an HDR image.

Make Your iPhone Look Like A Mac Keyboard With This Case

If you've ever had the desire to make your gadgets fit in with each other in terms of design, and you also happen to own a Mac computer, then perhaps this keyboard case will be the perfect companion for your iPhone 4 and your other Apple gadgets and computers. Granted it probably doesn't look like a Mac keyboard as the keys are black, but the chiclet-styled buttons and the white background the buttons rest on, could probably pass off as a Mac keyboard, or you could fool your friends into thinking that it's a new design by Apple.
