Microsoft takes Marketplace to 19 more countries

Microsoft opened the gates to its application store last year when it launched Windows Phone 7 but so far it has been available only in handful of countries. Those outside these countries had to fake their location, which meant they could only download free apps from the Marketplace. Now, however, the list of supported countries has been expanded with 19 new names added to the mix, taking the grand total to 35. If you are in any of the following countries, you can now download apps officially from the Marketplace:

Ultra slim Swiss Army USB tool has no knife

Earlier this year, Victorinox, makers of the original ‘Swiss Army Knife' announced their line of Swiss Army USB drives. Unfortunately you won't be opening any bottles or slicing through any packaging with these, since there are no blades or other miscellaneous tools attached. Coming in a Slim and Slim Duo with sizes ranging from 4GB to 64GB, the Victorinox Swiss Army USB drive is finally shipping and can be purchased with a price range of $39.99 to $249.99 at the Swiss Knife Shop. Although these drives aren't much smaller than traditional flash drives, they are as resilient as the rest of Victorinox's Swiss Army products.

BoBook's Wacom-Powered eReader is Big in Europe

BoBook's Wacom-Powered eReader is Big in Europe

Until you turn it on, the BeBook eReader is pretty good looking. Quick. Name me five e-readers without asking Google. Tricky, right? After the big names — Kindle, Nook and Sony — you might remember Kobo, but then you'll be left scouring your memory. That's not to say there aren't any other e-readers. It's just that in the U.S the market is already dominated by these big brands.

Over in Europe it's a different story. On a recent trip to London, I saw a lot of Kindles, but the U.K has its own Kindle store on Amazon. Back in Spain, I see no-name readers and Sony readers, and not much else.

Apple surpasses Nokia in global smartphone shipments

There was a time when Nokia was the king of the smartphone segment thanks to its Symbian platform. In 2007, Apple launched the iPhone and changed the smartphone game altogether. After four years from the launch of the first iPhone, Apple has beaten Nokia at its own game, by shipping the most number of smartphones in a quarter and becoming the top smartphone vendor in the world.

India bans filesharing websites

India bans filesharing websites

Well it was only just yesterday that we reported about how a 15 year old kid in Sweden got into legal trouble for downloading movies. He's not the first and he will probably not be the last, but there seems to be an increasing rate of filesharing websites being banned in certain countries (such as Malaysia who has blocked the Pirate Bay website) due to the abuse by users who upload copyrighted files onto them. As it turns out, India has also recently started banning filesharing websites, and it seems that the Indian populace is none too happy about it.

Another Foxconn worker commits suicide?

Another Foxconn worker commits suicide?

I'm starting to wonder whether the Foxconn factory has some sort of nefarious powers behind it which tend to cause humans who work there to take their own life – after all, the most recent case where a worker fell to his death from the sixth floor of the factory dormitory, in addition to past cases where underpaid, depressed and stressed workers decided to take their own lives which caused quite an uproar. Why did Foxconn make the news then. It could be because the company is one of the major contractors for the iPhone, in addition to manufacturing devices for Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Nokia and Sony Ericsson amongst others.

The new MacBook Air comes with i5 processor, Thunderbolt and backlit keyboard. As expected, Apple has updated the MacBook Air. The super-portable laptop has now become a serious rival to its big brother, the MacBook Pro. In fact, read the specs and you'll wonder why you would bother to buy a Pro ever again. And if you want a white plastic MacBook, you'd better rush to your local reseller — Apple has discontinued it.

The biggest internal changes are the processor and the new Thunderbolt port.

Off with his head. Serial blinkers are no longer a problem with Photoshop Elements 9. Grab your coats: Hell has just frozen over. Or rather, Photoshop has come to the Mac App Store. For $80, you can now download Photoshop Elements 9 from the App Store.

Ever since the Mac Store was announced, there have been two standout examples of apps that would “never” be sold through Apple's strictly-controlled channel. The first is Microsoft's Office suite. The second was Photoshop. The reasons? Price and compatibility.

The thinking goes that Adobe and Microsoft wouldn't want to give 30% of the revenue of their flagship products to Apple.

Looking forward to the refreshes of Apple's MacBook Air. If you have, you will be interested to know that specs of the upcoming MacBook Airs have been leaked, which could possibly be rumors or the real thing, but we'll let you decide that for yourself. For starters, most of us probably know that the refresh of the MacBook Airs will most probably be featuring OS X Lion, and some have speculated that the delay in the refresh was due to Apple wanting to wait for OS X Lion to be finalized before installing them on the new MacBook Airs.

While we don't need an app to tell us that we're stressed out, wouldn't it be interesting to find out how stressed out we are. In a quantifiable manner. The folks over at KDDI thought so too, and came up with an app and hardware combination for Android phones to do the job. While it's not available for sale (it currently is an experiment by KDDI's R&D team), it was recently demonstrated on video.

Is the iPod becoming less popular these days?

When it comes to listening to our music on the go, and before the emergence of smartphones, there was a good chance you would see someone on the street sporting an iPod or the Zune MP3 player, or even an iRiver. However all of that has changed, especially with smartphones these days sporting the ability (and the capacity) to play our songs while on the go, which means that unless you need to bring with you your entire 160GB collection of MP3s, chances are you will let your smartphone double as your music player instead.

At first HTC told Apple to eeff off and learn to compete, but it seemed like the International Trade Commission may not agree with HTC's point of view. The ITC has just made an initial determination in the ongoing patent infringement case between HTC and Apple and it's not looking great for HTC. The judge ruled that HTC had infringed on two of the ten patents in question, and if this ends up flushing through, it's possible that select HTC products would be banned from ever arriving in the US.
