HTC Desire Android 2.3 update to launch “end of July”

HTC has issued another short statement regarding the off/on Android 2.3 update for its popular HTC Desire phone, with the company now saying the Desire version of the Gingerbread upgrade will “begin” to launch before the end of July. Which is at least something. Here's the full, rather brief, statement:. Hi everyone. We have more news about our build of Gingerbread for Desire. Our testing has gone well so we will begin rolling out the update by the end of July! Thank you again for your support!

But remember, always take update timeline announcements with a pinch of salt.

ASUS Eee Pad Slider delayed until September

ASUS Eee Pad Slider delayed until September

ASUS' Eee Pad Slider can't be said to have had a smooth transition from the drawing board to the store shelf – in fact, this Android 3.0 Honeycomb powered device has seen its launch date being pushed all the way back to September this year, at least according to a post that is on the ASUS UK Facebook page. According to ASUS, it will confirm launch dates and pricing of the hybrid tablet sometime later this July, and prior to its launch, ASUS hopes customers will take their time to complete some surveys in order for ASUS to get a better ‘feel' of what customers look for in future products.

Two of Verizon's 4G LTE capable Android-powered phones are now available online at Target for a lot less than what Big Red is asking. The devices in question are the LG Revolution and the Samsung Droid Charge. The official recommended price for the former is $249.99 with a new two-year contract, and $299.99 with the same 2-year commitment for the latter. Those are prices that are well above what has been pretty much the standard for high-end smartphones in the US ever since the original iPhone launched – $199.99.

7Digital app updated, now with Android lock-screen player controls

The latest Android release of the 7Digital music player has one very nice little feature built into it – an integrated player control that works from the Android lock screen. We were rather sceptical about how this may work on the various customised lock screens out there, so installed the thing to have a look. You'll need to sign in with a 7Digital account even to play music already on your SD card, but when you do….
…that's what it looks like on the Xperia Arc lock screen (left) and the HTC Desire lock screen (right). It basically opens the app's interface when you press standby.

Are you tired of not being able to find band mates to jam along with you when you're bored at home. Well it looks like you won't have any trouble doing so in the future. A Japanese researcher has managed to repurpose the HRP-2 humanoid robot from Kawada Industries to be the perfect musical companion. Using a program, the robot is able to listen to and watch a human being play the acoustic guitar, and then pick up the beat and melody of the song.

Is Apple warming up to iPhone stylus idea?

Ever since iPhone launched, Steve Jobs has been denying the possibility of stylus on Apple's touch screen devices. Stylus. Why would you need one, when you got this amazing, finger operated multi-touch interface on a device with a super responsive capacitive touch screen.
It is true in most cases. Except one - when you need/want to actually write or draw something on the touchscreen display. Finger really sucks as a writing tool on touchscreen.

Motorola Titanium arriving this July 24th

Motorola Titanium arriving this July 24th

You know, when it comes to credit cards, there used to be the regular credit card with Gold being the next logical upgrade when you have achieved that promotion at the workplace. Well, it seems as though Gold is the basic card these days, with other classes such as Platinum and even Titanium now. It makes us wonder whether the Motorola Titanium will live up to its name then when July 24th rolls around.

Facebook Vibes code spotted

Facebook is certainly not going to take the upcoming Google+ social network for granted, relying on its 750 million (and growing) user base alone to pull it through difficult times. No sir, the social network giant has an arsenal of its own to remain ahead of the competition, and we have already seen them fire a salvo in the Facebook Skype team up earlier this week that was deemed as “awesome“. Well, it seems that digging deeper into the situation has uncovered something else more interesting – the Skype install code points toward a music application known as Vibes.

iPhone 6 is in the works?

We don't even have the iPhone 5 out, and here is word of the iPhone 6 alongside its charging plans that have been bandied about as a teaser. It seems that experiments have already been done for the 2012 version of the phone, where it will rely on a new method that will juice up the handset. According to the Wall Street Journal, they do not know what will entail, but it will most probably be inductive in nature – bringing wireless charging to the masses just like how HP did with their webOS-powered devices. .

Huawei Raises Projected Smartphone Sales to 20 Million

Huawei Raises Projected Smartphone Sales to 20 Million

Earlier this year, low-cost Android handset manufacturer Huawei projected sales of 12-15 million smartphones in 2011. That was no small number, either, considering 2010 sales topped out around 3 million. It seems it still wasn't a big enough goal for the company, as they have raised the number of Android handsets they plan to sell to 20 million. It's a huge number for the company, but a small chunk of the market compared to bigger handset manufacturers. Yesterday we learned that HTC hit 21 million handsets sold in the first half of the year alone.

Remember last time when Intel said that their prototype Proton-powered processors will outpace the electron-powered processors and revolutionize everything. Well, this is almost similar to that dream of Intel. Let's take a pint of salt with this article, this thing ain't gonna entirely wipe power-hungry processors and memory off the charts anytime soon, but at least there's a hope in it. So you're stoked upon discovering your mutant ability to read minds as well as perform telekinetic acts – but what about the rest of the general populace who aren't part of the homo superior branch. Parlee Cycles has the solution, having developed a carbon fiber concept bicycle which relies on nothing but brainwaves to have its gears changed. This does not mean that the end of physical switches is nigh, but it does pave the way for future brain-controlled devices. The bicycle, also known as PXP, will rely on a couple of parts so that you have it under telepathic control.

Since the iPad 2′s launch earlier this year, it looks consumer demand for the iOS tablet hasn't been slowing down at all. Facing shortages earlier this year, and then recovering - Apple isn't going to let that happen again. The company has been reported to be receiving a shipment of 5 million touch sensors for the iPad 2 this month. With Apple expected to ship between 12-14 million iPads in Q3 of 2011, analysts are predicting around 40 million units of iPad tablets will be sold in the calendar year. A figure much higher than Samsung hopes to achieve with the Galaxy S II which in turn shows just how popular the iPad is.

Branching headphone splitter lets you connect up to three headphones

A while back we reported on a set of concept headphones that would allow users to plug into each other headphones and share the music. It is a pretty good idea, but the bad news is that it is only a concept device, which means we may never actually see it hit mass production. However, if sharing music with friends and loved ones is your thing, perhaps Kikkerland's branching headphone splitters might be right up your alley. Typically headphone splitters only allow splitting up to two ways, which could prove to be an awkward situation if there are three of you, which means one person could potentially be left out.
