The Motorola Defy

The Motorola Defy

Increasingly, modern gadgets are forcing the consumer to compromise on durability, for the luxury of an intelligent device. The iPads, iPods, and iPhones of this world are some of the most feature-packed hand-held machines on the planet, but their flimsy design, coupled with a glass viewing screen, means that they are prone to scratches and dents. Let's not consider the survival prospects of an iPhone or iPad that is dropped into the gutter, on a rainy afternoon in January.

BeBook Club 'S' boosts speed, contrast, leaves off nothing for savings

BeBook Club 'S' boosts speed, contrast, leaves off nothing for savings

The respectable, if not exactly mind-blowing, BeBook Club e-reader is getting an update and adding an "S." So, what exactly does the BeBook Club 'S' bring to the party. Well, one of them fancy Pearl e-ink screens for starters, but also storage (it now sports 1GB of internal flash) and speed (it's got a beefy new 800MHz CPU). The design remains the same, but we're hoping the price doesn't. At $179 the original BeBook Club was always a tough sell, and with the price of the Kindle and Nook tumbling fast the 'S' here better also stand for savings.

MobileMe/iCloud phishing scam on the rise again

Apple announced its intentions to replace MobileMe with iCloud earlier this year at the WWDC 2011, and not long after that, phishing scams taking advantage of this update started to rise. While it wasn't so huge back then, it looks like those phishing scams have started to rise again, according to a report from MacRumors. Apparently quite a number of its readers are receiving emails telling them to visit a website to update their MobileMe account so they can make the transition over to iCloud.

Apple seeds new OS X Lion 10.7.2 build, iPhoto beta 3, iCloud beta 9 to devs

Apple seeded a new OS X Lion 10.7.2 build, iPhoto 9.2 beta 3 and iCloud beta 9 to its developers on Friday. Apple's release notes said the Lion update focuses on Airport, AppKit, GraphicsDrivers, iCal, iChat, Mac App Store, Mail, Spotlight and Time Machine. As usual, Apple warns that this is a pre-release build and that developers should not yet install it on a machine that they depend on for their business. Despite that warning, there are no known new issues with the seed and we've included Apple's notes after the break.

Razer Blade: hands-on with 17-inches of gaming greatness

Something big's been brewing over in Carlsbad, and the time has finally come for it to be revealed to the world: the Razer Blade. The onyx aluminum beaut before you is the culmination of over three years of work by a stealth team of engineers - many of them absorbed from the former OQO team, but Razer also pulled talent from other places to build the Blade. Despite being only 0.88-inches thick (thinner than another 17-incher we know...), the svelte number still packs a punch with a 2.8GHz Core i7 2640M CPU and GeForce GT 555M graphics replete with 2GB of GDDR5 video memory.

Smartphone App Bypasses Printed Paper Tickets

Smartphone App Bypasses Printed Paper Tickets

Want to attend a game last minute but nervous about interacting with the "Looking for tickets?" community parked outside the stadium. There's an app for that. Beginning Thursday, fans can access tickets purchased through the StubHub mobile app, and then display them on their smartphones to be scanned for entrance to the park.
Some ticket vendors currently provide the option to purchase a ticket online then "print" to a mobile device via e-mail for scanning (SF Giants official ticketing, for instance, offers this).

Americans driving less, log fewest miles since 2004

Americans driving less, log fewest miles since 2004

The price of a gallon of gasoline has been a major downer so far in 2011, and data shows that it may be affecting driving habits. According to The Detroit News, the Federal Highway Administration claims that Americans drove 1.453 trillion miles in the first half of 2011. That's down 1.1 percent compared to the first six months of 2010, or an eye-popping 15.5 billion fewer miles compared to the first half of last year. In fact, the government report shows that total miles are down to the lowest level since 2004. Traffic was down on both rural and urban roads during that time span, though the greater drop occurred outside our nation's cities.

Ghostbusters Pillow Proton Packs

Ghostbusters Pillow Proton Packs

Are you a huge fan of the Ghostbusters movie and cartoon franchise. If you answered in the affirmative and have already picked up the Ghostbusters ghost trap from Mattel, then this might very well be your next purchase. Made with love (and that means right in the comfort of home of course), this pillow proton pack was conjured by Etsy seller JezebelRose. This backpack will cost you $150 a pop – which is mighty expensive, even more so in the beleaguered economy at the moment. It won't come with a ghost trap at that price either, so some of you might think of it as daylight robbery.

Sprint Motorola Photon 4G gets a small software update

The Motorola Photon 4G for Sprint hasn't even been out for a month, but it's already received some software update love. Now that's what we call caring. The update isn't going to bring any earth-shattering new bits, as it's not a major Android revision or anything like that. It's just a minor software update that's meant to fix a couple of specific issues, while also improving the phone's overall stability and responsiveness, and making as few slowdowns appear as possible.

Say goodbye to the rotary Mazda RX8

Say goodbye to the rotary Mazda RX8

Mazda, the Zoom-Zoom brand famous for its rotary engined sports cars, has decided stop making the RX-8, the only rotary powered model in its current range. Factors linked to the death of the RX-8 are falling sales and stringent global emissions standards, which are only going to get tougher. Production has already stopped in early July, and global sales will end later this year.
This comes after the Hiroshima based carmaker pulled out the RX-8 from Europe last year, as the high-revving 1.3-litre, twin-rotor rotary engined car failed to meet EU emissions standards.

Nikon unveils S1200pj and AW100 cameras, we go hands-on

In case you were distracted by all the Sony fuss this morning, Nikon also chose today to announce a gaggle of fresh cameras. Most of the new models are incremental updates that will demand in-depth reviews when they're released in September. In the meantime, however, two cameras stand out as warranting a bit of quick hands-on attention. Firstly, there's the Coolpix S1200pj priced at $430, which is the third generation of Nikon's line of projector cameras and appears to house some significant improvements. Next up, we have the $380 AW100, which represents Nikon's first foray into the all-weather niche since the days of celluloid.

Android-targeted malware jumps 76% in Q2, McAfee says

A new report recently issued by the security firm McAfee suggests that the number of malware applications targeting Android devices jumped 76% during the second quarter of this year, making Android the “most attacked” mobile operating system. "This year we've seen record-breaking numbers of malware, especially on mobile devices, where the uptick is in direct correlation to popularity," senior vice president of McAfee labs Vincent Weafer said. Android users typically install the malware accidentally and assume the app is from a safe and legitimate developer. The most prevalent malware-infected modified applications were:.

Pink HTC Wildfire S now available in the UK, free from £15 per month

The HTC Wildfire S is the Taiwanese manufacturer's budget Android-powered smartphone right now. Even if it's not the cheapest Android smartphone around, the Wildfire S has a lot going for it – mainly the fact that its specced a bit above most of its competitors, so despite the small premium you have to pay it may be worth it. Well, you be the judge of that. Yet if you love pink, you may not be an impartial judge anymore.

Sony a77 DSLR

Sony a77 DSLR

Sony has just released a salvo of cameras, and within that rather elite group, the Alpha 77 (a77) sits at the top.  The new a77 is the Sony a700 successor, and has a 24.3 Megapixel sensor, but although this number is impressive, it has other features that are even more interesting. Video capture  with auto-focus: First, this camera has a stationary translucent mirror that lets light go to the main sensor and the auto-focus sensor at the same time. This means that the mirror does not have to ever move the mirror. This is particularly interesting for capturing video with full auto-focus.

Formula One drivers aren't born, they're made. Sure, a select few enter life with otherworldly reflexes, a sixth sense for speed and the financial backing needed to make it to the top. But there's a whole mess of steps they need to take before they can get there. And for many – take Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica as a couple of examples – one of those steps is the World Series by Renault.

The new Droid Bionic ad sure has it all: a Portman-esque lady in an illuminated leather blouse, brandishing a giant sword against a Terminator-looking 'bot shooting lasers from his hands, all taking place in some crazy sky coliseum thing. As for the actual handset. Not so much on that front, save for a name at the end and a promised September release date - oh, and the implied promise that the phone will literally slice the heads off of its Android brethren.
