Baja 1000 1970 Grabber Olds is our personal hero

Racing is racing. Whether it's pounding the quarter mile into submission or kicking it sideways around a circle track, going fender to fender or against the clock is the same kind of rush no matter the flavor. As you well know, some of the biggest names in hot rodding tried their hand at what would eventually become the Baja 1000 in the '60s. Parnelli Jones, Don Prudhomme, Jim Garner and Steve McQueen all headed to the sands of Mexico to bash around in massive muscle cars between 1967 and 1972.
Needless to say, few of those racers are around today.

Nanoshells trap light for more efficient solar panels

Nanoshells trap light for more efficient solar panels

Scientists at Stanford are hard at work trying to improve the efficiency and durability of solar panels — two key factors that have kept the Sun from becoming a more popular source of energy. Their latest effort involves nanocrystalline-silicon, a material that has proven resilient and highly conductive, but not very good at absorbing light. Their solution, nanoshells — hollowed out spheres of silicon that trap and recirculate light much like a whispering gallery does sound.

AT&T LG Phoenix Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now available

AT&T LG Phoenix Android 2.3 Gingerbread update now available

AT&T's version of the LG Optimus One has finally been updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread, many months after its internationally-selling siblings received the same treatment, and even a few months after Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was released. And while it's unclear if the Optimus One line (including the Phoenix) will be updated to that at some point, if you own an LG Phoenix you should at least be happy that an update is now available for you. And not ‘on its way', mind. For this is not an over-the-air affair, unfortunately, so you'll have to use a computer (running Windows, no less) to perform the update.

New vehicles 14% more fuel efficient than four years ago

It's amazing what a little regulation can do for an industry. In the past four years, the fuel economy of new vehicles has improved by an average of 14 percent, according to a new study by the University of Michigan. This increase comes on the heels of big hikes in the Corporate Average Fuel Economy, which Congress raised in 2007 for the first time in decades. Since then, CAFE has been set at 34.1 miles per gallon by 2016, and a new proposal that's pending would raise the fuel economy standard to 54.5 mpg by 2025.

Samsung Galaxy Note comes in Berry Pink

Samsung Galaxy Note comes in Berry Pink

The Samsung Galaxy Note resides in no (wo)man's land in terms of it size – 5.3″ is definitely extremely generous for a smartphone, and yet it is not quite in tablet territory just yet. Well, Samsung expects the Galaxy Note to cater to those who tote their devices around in a handbag (for the ladies), as guys will proudly carry it in their hands. The ladies might feel as though the current color scheme of the Galaxy Note does not cater to their fancy, which is why the South Korea company is preparing a rather clichéd shade, releasing the smartphone in “Berry Pink”.

iPad 3 to have truly amazing screen?

So there was speculation that the iPad 3′s IGZO display from Sharp was spotted earlier on, apart from its demonstration apps and commercials being drawn up for a possible early March release (which is slightly less than a month away), so why not throw in another rumor into the mix. It seems that the New York Times sniffed out an Apple employee who shared that the new iPad is definitely going through internal testing, and hopefully it will not be lost in a bar. It is touted to be "essentially the same size and shape as the iPad 2," with a "truly amazing" screen – sounds like phrases the late Steve Jobs would have used himself.

How NASCAR is coping with its slipping audience

How NASCAR is coping with its slipping audience

The growth of NASCAR over the past decade has been one of the stories of American sports – and not only was the series getting huge viewership, it was attracting stars from other series and its drivers were breaking left-turn-only taboos at Le Mans and the Race of Champions. Still, the dream couldn't continue unabated, and lately NASCAR has been battling dwindling audiences at some of its big races and disappearing big-money sponsorships. To get around it, teams are doing three things: getting more sponsors, finding those sponsors further away from the traditional corporate playground, and engaging in "non-traditional sponsorships.".

PaperKarma app helps fight real life junk mail

Don't you hate it when you receive actual physical junk mail in your mail box. Unlike spam email which can be deleted at a click of a button without second thought, physical junk mail actually takes up space in real life and not only is it an annoyance, but it is unnecessary wastage as how many of us actually bother with them to begin with, right. Well a new app by the name of PaperKarma is looking to solve that problem for you with a simple click of the camera.

Double murder occurs after Facebook “defriending”

I always find it highly amusing that some people take their social network relationships and connections too seriously – so what if someone takes you off as their friend on Facebook. Is it a good enough reason for something as serious as murder. Apparently so, as a Tennessee couple who “defriended” a woman on Facebook were later murdered right in their abode, no thanks to the jilted woman's father and another male suspect. Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece said, “It's the worst thing I've ever seen. We've had murders, but nothing like this. This is just senseless.”

Tesla Model X revealed

Here it is, the Tesla Model X, the CUV prototype version of the Model S. We'll have more details live from California soon, but here's what we know at the moment. The Model X can hit 0-60 in 4.4 seconds, will cost around the same as the Model S, and it has those cool "falcon" gullwing-like doors.
With the batteries housed in the same low skateboard as the S, the X has a lot of space. Since the CUV doesn't need a combustion engine, there are actually two trunks: one in front and one in the back. This means, Elon Musk said at the unveiling today, that the Model X can fit seven people and their luggage.

Wall Street Journal Corroborates Early Reports of Google Entertainment System

This past weekend it was revealed that Google requested permission from the FCC to begin testing a home entertainment system that would use Bluetooth and WiFi to stream content to music players inside a home. It’s being built based on Android and it’s assumed that Android@Home and Google Open Accessory will be the driving forces behind the project. While the FCC report was enough to get us to believe that Google was, in fact, working on this, we’re glad to see the Wall Street Journal reporting very similar developments.

Verizon's recently launched oddly-named Motorola-made tablet duo, the Droid Xyboard 10.1 and the Droid Xyboard 8.2, have received a software update. It would be a rather minor affair, except for the fact that this update enables global roaming abilities for the two tablets. So if you like to travel overseas a lot (and take your Xyboard with you, of course), you should be quite happy about this. And you should apply this update as soon as possible.

After updating, your Xyboard will run software version 1.6.0M_279. Alongside the global roaming abilities, there are other enhancements as well.

Isn't it a pain when you have to look at your earbuds to work out which one's left and which one's right . Or you find that you've had the wrong phone in the wrong ear . Well the Japan Science and Technology Agency ( JST ) has a solution with their Universal Earphones.  Using a proximity sensor the Universal Earphones automatically detect which ear each phone is in so that you'll never have to worry about your stereo seperation again. In addition if you share earphones (something that all teenagers seem to do), then the phones will detect this do and put a full mono stream into each earphone rather than just a single channel.

HTC Autonome mobile phone concept is pretty interesting

Let's face it, with our smartphones performing a good many tasks for us throughout the day, which means that sometimes we'd be lucky if we can make it through the entire day without the phone dying on us. External battery packs are an answer but that could mean unnecessary bulk and sometimes could mean that we need to bring with us an additional device wherever we go. Well Francois Rybarczyk has thought of that and might have come up with a solution with the HTC Autonome mobile phone concept. The idea behind the Autonome is that it is a smartphone with an external battery embedded into the device.

You can tell that LG have been pricing the phone and not Prada.

Moreover, considering that the Prada Phone 3.0 sports a 4.3-inch 480x800 touchscreen, 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of built in storage, the price isn't all that bad.

Sony patent sketches reveal Wii U-esque controller system

Sony patent sketches reveal Wii U-esque controller system

While Nintendo is darn proud of its attempts to differentiate itself from other console manufacturers with its unusual hardware choices, it looks like Sony also had plenty of touchscreen-toting, TV-connected ideas way back in 2010. These patent sketches explain a handheld device that bares a foggy resemblance to Nintendo's incoming Wii U. The “position-dependent gaming, 3-D controller, and handheld as a remote,” would act as the “input to a video game” — or controller, as we technical types like to call it — adding in some augmented reality functionality as an overlay to camera input on the device.

Worried about what the long-arm of the law would have to say about the collision, the driver then proceeded to attempt to make a speedy getaway. Rather than throwing the vehicle in reverse, however, the operator opted for drive, sending the vehicle careening through the front glass, though untold merchandise and into the back wall.

The naming of a storm seems innocuous enough. After all, when some sort of weather event – be it a hurricane, tropical storm, blizzard or flood – comes along, we as human beings are going to talk about it, and having a name makes that a much easier process. So, the marketing folk at Sassenbach, the ad agency used by Mini in its home country, probably thought it would be harmless and fun to buy the naming rights for an upcoming storm in Germany (as an aside.
