Express lanes to get in and out of the Apple Store faster

Express lanes to get in and out of the Apple Store faster

Apple is reportedly setting up express lanes in its stores to help deal with the upcoming busy shopping period. Earlier this week, the company updated its retail store app to allow customers to pay for smaller items with their iPhones and iTunes accounts. Items such as cases, cables, speakers, other accessories can be selected, purchased and taken home without any contact with Apple store employees. However, it seems Apple is eager to make things even more efficient this holiday season.

Amazon adds Hulu Plus, ESPN ScoreCenter to Kindle's Android apps, Nook Tablet loses its edge

Not sufficiently amped up for the impending release of Amazon's first tablet. That could very well change as the Seattle-based company's just made its thousands-strong app pot a little sweeter. After reminding the product-buying populace a few days ago that the newly birthed Kindle Fire is, indeed, a tablet with access to a boatload of Android apps, Bezos and co. are now upping the slate's ante by announcing the availability of Hulu Plus and ESPN ScoreCenter.

Droid RAZR ad shows how it was designed

There's no question that the Motorola RAZR is today's hottest 4G LTE phone, and if you wonder how Motorola managed to build a phone that is just about half of the thickness of the first generation LTE phones, check the video in the full post. Granted, it's an ad (so take it with a grain of salt!), but it shows design details that were not disclosed before. This video shows how the phone was structurally designed to be more compact, and yet very rigid. It's a 1mn video that's worth checking out if you like thin smartphones.

Don't own PlayStation Move yet, but have plans to pick one up. What better time to shop for one than this holiday season. At least that's what Sony hopes that you'll be thinking with the announcement of its brand new Move bundle. The bundle basically contains everything you need to start playing Move-powered games (minus the PlayStation 3 and TV of course), with an MSRP of $99.99.

DROID RAZR Teardown; How Did Motorola Get It So Thin? [Video]

If you read my review, you’d know I was amazed by how thin the Motorola Droid RAZR was considering all the things you get inside the 4.3 inch package. Thankfully, Motorola knows how to read minds. Or Phandroid reviews. They’ve posted a video showing how they were able to get the RAZR into a 7.1mm thin and light package. Watch the video above if you’re really curious.

If for some reason you wanted Motorola to go deeper than that, iFixIt has posted their teardown of the device. These features show the process of taking it apart and putting it back together in a nice, informative gallery.

Apple releases iOS 5.0.1, fixes bugs plaguing battery life and document syncing

Get ready to fire up iTunes and plug in that iOS device, because Apple's just released iOS 5.0.1. The release notes are identical to the two beta releases, which include fixing bugs relating to battery life and document syncing, while also re-enabling app switching gestures that developers previously had access to on the original iPad. And for those down under, voice recognition has apparently been improved when dictating with an Aussie accent. Those not interested in the 790MB download from iTunes, can look for a 44.6MB delta — including only the changes — from their device Settings.

Microsoft retail store opens up in Northern California

Microsoft retail store opens up in Northern California

I still remember the scene in the “Devil's Advocate” that saw Al Pacino, playing the role of the devil, purposely putting his finger into a bowl of holy water at a church, making it boil in the process. That cheeky look on his face was a masterstroke in acting, and I suppose reading about Microsoft opening up their first retail store in Northern California that lies a stone's throw away from an Apple store is somewhat in the same vein. This store is around 4,000 square feet in size, and lies around 7 miles away from Apple's Cupertino headquarters. There were plenty of people queuing up overnight to join in the opening bash.

World of Warcraft: almost a million subscribers lost last quarter

World of Warcraft: almost a million subscribers lost last quarter

It looks like Activision Blizzard's popular MMORPG, World of Warcraft, is finally starting to die out. At the company's recent financial report conference call for Q3 2011, it announced that it finished the quarter with 10.3 million active subscribers. Compared to the previous quarter this year, which it ended with 11.1 million active subscribers, the game has lost almost a million active subscribers. With WOW being Activision Blizzard's most profitable revenue-recurring business, this definitely isn't a very good sign. However, they did mention that they are working on developing new content to improve the game.

Digidrench whets our appetite for water-based Arduino adventures (video)

Wondering what you get when you mix an Arduino kit with some food coloring and plenty of water. Well, the Digidrench team came up with the concept of developing a media controller that mimics the flow of water in and out of three separate containers. The pay-off. Seeing three of the team get coated in a brightly colored mess. An Arduino kit is connected to a sensor that gauges the amount of water in the tanks and transmits the watery action to a corresponding video slice. Take the water out, and the deluge reverses. Pour faster, and the test subjects get poured on faster. Pour slowly and, well, you get it.

Solar Still Purifies Water With the Heat of the Sun

The Eliodomestico uses the sun to purify water. Gabriele Diamanti's Eliodomestico is an incredibly simple water purifier. So simple, in fact, that you just tip the dirty water in, leave it in the sun for the day and come back home to find up to five liters of clean drinking water waiting for you.
It works like a regular solar still, only it should be cheaper, easier to make and more portable. The Eliodomestico is made from terracotta pots and a metal “boiler.” The user pours water in the top, where it is heated by the sun and boils.

Nissan Juke-R web build soldiers on with interior fittings

The crack team of engineers that Nissan put to task on building the Juke-R prototype worked hard on their assignment, and have taken us along every step of the way. Fitting the mechanical bits from a GT-R into the tiny Juke crossover, it turns out, has been no easy task. So with the engine and drivetrain in place, it's time to start re-fitting the interior. Sounds simple enough, right. Well, with the engine pushed that far back into what was the Juke's cabin, the boffins had to rethink everything, and make sure the controls were within easy reach for the lucky son of a gun (or poor soul) who'd be driving this beast.

Well, that time has come. Speaking at the LTE North America conference in Dallas, the CEO of AT&T Labs, Krish Prabhu, has confirmed that Ma Bell intends to begin the deployment of its LTE-Advanced network in 2013. Sadly, he didn't elaborate any further, (which leaves a pretty wide target, if you ask us). Still, with the potential for improved capacity, coverage and stupid fast speeds, we're not exactly complaining.
