T-Mobile CMO: subsidized pricing hurts wireless competition, undermines hardware value

Could an end to unsubsidized smartphones be on its way for US carriers. If T-Mobile's Chief Marketing Officer Cole Brodman had his way, that familiar on-contract pricing would've gone the way of the Dodo a long time ago. Speaking at this week's GeekWire Summit in Seattle, the Magenta exec vented his frustrations with the industry's current business model, citing his belief that low cost handsets not only distort consumers' perspectives, effectively "[devaluing]. the hardware they are using," but also position wireless market players to compete unevenly.

T-Mobile CMO says smartphone subsidies need to go

. Speaking at GeekWire's technology summit in Seattle, T-Mobile's chief marketing officer Cole Brodman voice some strong opinions regarding carrier subsidies, claiming they are hurting the mobile industry. “It actually distorts what devices actually cost and it causes OEMs, carriers - everybody to compete on different playing fields, and I think it is really difficult, especially from a consumer perspective, because it causes consumers to devalue completely the hardware they are using.” he said. “It is amazing hardware, but it has become kind of throw away.

Apple forced to cut profit margins with new iPad, analyst says

. In an effort to keep the iPad's price the same, Apple may have had to cut profit margins compared to previous models, The Wall Street Journal reported. UBM TechInsights on Thursday estimated the company's newest iPad cost about $310 to manufacture the 16GB, 4G LTE model, which retails for $629. Based on those estimates, Apple's gross profit margin is 51%, 5 points less than the iPad 2′s 56% margin at the tablet's launch. The cost increase is largely due to the new iPad's Retina display, which UBM estimates to cost Apple about $70 compared to the $49.50 display found on the iPad 2.

Lamborghini takes us through the development of the Aventador J

We don't typically lose control of our faculties at the sight of the latest supercar. In most cases, the vehicles are slightly different shades of the same theme: high horsepower, low slung, two seats and a super-exclusive price tag to match. While the Lamborghini Aventador J certainly fulfills all of those criteria, the roofless wonder also boasts the sort of brash ostentatiousness that's been missing from the upper echelon of automotive engineering recently. The roadster design is so perfectly over the top, we can't help but love it.

Asus Padfone gets preposterously priced in the UK

Asus Padfone gets preposterously priced in the UK

The Asus Padfone is a very good concept, though not without its shortcomings. The small battery inside the phone, for example. Its success may also get hampered by the price being asked for it. During MWC, I was told by an Asus rep that the price for the phone+tablet dock combo should be somewhere around £450 in the UK. And that's a decent price, even compared to other high-end Android smartphones. And you're basically getting two devices for the price of one.

However, £699.98 is anything but a good price for the Padfone. And unfortunately that's exactly how much one retailer, FlagshipFones, is asking for it.

Titanic wreck site mapped with photographs

Titanic wreck site mapped with photographs

We all know that the Titanic hit an ice berg and sank on its maiden voyage, and thanks to James Cameron's award-winning movie we have a rough idea of how it went down - but is it accurate. It looks like we might be able to find out in the future. With the aid of autonomous underwater vehicles (UAV), expedition teams covered a 2-by-3-mile area of where the remains of the Titanic lay, snapping 130,000 high-resolution photographs. The photographs were then stitched together with a computer to provide a detailed photo montage of the debris.

Huawei Prism Hit the FCC

Huawei's looking to come to town with another low-end device, it seems, as the Huawei Prism – model number U8651T – has passed the FCC. Its model number seems to position it close to the Huawei Sonic, a device which launched on T-Mobile last year. It had a 3.5 inch display, 512MB of RAM, Android 2.3 and more. We won't make any assumptions on detailed specs but we don't expect them to be much different from the Sonic. If you want to check the FCC listing out for yourself, click here.

Electric pod vehicle concept

Electric pod vehicle concept

Designer Vincet Montreuli's brain has managed to conjure up this rather interesting looking all electric vehicle concept that comes in the form factor of a pod. The whole idea of this conceptual ride is to be integrated into Amsterdam's current transportation methods. The whole idea of this pod is to have it run alongside bicycles, and hopefully, if the adoption rate is rather high, it will decrease the amount of car ownership, and will also be far more environmentally friendly.

Ladies, if there was ever a tablet designed specifically for women in mind, we're thinking that this purse-looking tablet might be it. Two high school students are taking part in a bit of an experiment at Vanderbilt University. The college's Medical and Electromechanical Design Laboratory (MED Lab) is working on an Android app that turns tablets into a teaching aid for the visually impaired. Areas of math that rely heavily on visual elements, such as algebra and calculus, prove problematic for students with poor eyesight. A common solution involves pipe cleaners, a cork board and push pins, to recreate graphs, but the method is quite slow.

Sharp is partnering, not with another major player in the consumer electronics field but, with the Japanese government to create a standard based on its Home Energy Management System or HEMS. The platform allows users to not only monitor their energy consumption, but also reduce their electrical burden through home automation tools. With the aid of a tablet or smartphone, home owners can dim lighting and televisions or control thermostats, while monitoring how such changes affect energy consumption in real time. Sharp plans offer the system commercially with a router and WiFi modules that sit between appliances and your electrical outlet.
