Carnegie Mellon robot jumps up, jumps up and glides down (video)

We can handle the imaginary terror of UFOs and nightmarish, flying mammals. But, robots that can jump like a human and then glide like a colugo. Now you're just filling Mr. Spielberg with even more sci-fi, end of days fodder. Carnegie Mellon researchers Matthew Woodward and Metin Sitti have crafted a prototype jumping and gliding bot at the university's NanoRobotics Lab that springs into action using a pair of human knee-like joints. The automated hi-jinks don't end there either, as the duo's invention then spreads its legs to catch some air and glide on back to terra firma.

German court upholds injunction against Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Apple wins nationwide ban

A German court has weighed in on Apple's seemingly interminable patent battle against Samsung, and it isn't looking good for Galaxy Tab users. In a ruling issued yesterday, a Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court upheld last month's preliminary injunction, banning the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 within Germany. Citing the slate's “minimalist, modern form,” presiding judge Johanna Brueckner-Hoffmann determined that Samsung's tablet bears a “clear impression of similarity” with the iPad 2, thereby meriting a nationwide ban.

British's latest uber powerful SUV looks familiarly like something from German

Yes, its resemblance to the Porsche Cayenne may be cunning, but what you're looking at here is the “world's first Super-SUV,” created by British carmaker Eterniti Motors. It's bulgy and aggressive-looking, but we just can't shake the fact that this is clearly a Cayenne ripoff. Still, we like the Cayenne, so how bad the Eterniti creation be. Called the Hemera, the Eterniti Motors sport-ute will allegedly go into production at the end of 2012.

The Car Show pits Ferrari 308 vs. Toyota Camry, DeLorean vs. Toyota Sienna

Our favorite cars from when we were younger aren't always the exciting machines we expect them to be. Matt Farah and Dan Neil decided to explore this idea on a recent episode of The Car Show. Neil picked a Ferrari 308 GTS while Farah went with the gullwing-wearing DeLorean DMC-12. Both are sports cars from an older era, and serve as perfect examples of misplaced idolatry. Each host provided a modern machine to use in a drag race against the older vehicles. Lining up at the strip in his 308, Neil faced down Farah who piloted a 2010 Toyota Camry SE.

Netflix Updated to Support all Android 2.2 and 2.3 Devices

Though unofficial methods have existed to get Netflix on nearly any Android device you desire, the app has officially been updated to support all Android 2.2 and Android 2.3 devices. It took the streaming movie service some time to reach this point, slowly growing the number of supported handset from a handful of phones at the apps initial release, slowly adding more. Tablet support may still be spotty, but just like smartphones there has been little keeping the developer crowd from finding ways to stream your favorite flicks right to your Honeycomb device.

MyWay – a cool ultraportable electric scooter

GreenReflex has launched a new ultraportable electric scooter called MyWay. It is a foldable transportation device that is powered by an electric motor and a Li-Ion battery. Its main advantage is being extremely compact (110 x 24 x 37cm, folded) and at 12kg, it is relatively light, thanks to an aluminum construction. It has a range of 30km (18.6 miles) on flat surfaces and your mileage will vary depending on usage conditions.  Interestingly if you are using it on a campus or a warehouse it's probably more than fine.
MyWay can be charged from a regular electric outlet, although we're not quite sure how long it will take.

Flyin' Miata at Targa Newfoundland, Part 1: Meet your classmates

While the 2011 Targa Newfoundland doesn't officially kick off until Monday, a handful of competitors have already arrived in St. John's to take advantage of the Open Road Motorsports Targa School. Operated by veterans of the event, the school gives novice competitors a little taste of the days to come. Glen Clarke, our instructor, routinely pilots a Porsche 911 to accolades and glory, so his word is worth pure gold to our motley crew.

It's a big deal when the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety honors a vehicle with a Top Safety Pick designation, and now the 2012 Audi A6 and 2012 Volkswagen Passat can join the big deal club. The IIHS gave both VW Group vehicles the award after they received top scores in stringent front, side and rear impact testing. Both vehicles also feature electronic stability control; a must for any Top Safety Pick winner. The last check mark any Top Pick needs is a top score in roof strength testing.

If you happen to be rocking to the AVG Virus Scanner on a Windows Phone 7 smartphone, might you be a little bit more cautious as we bring you word that the AVG Virus Scanner for Microsoft's mobile platform has been pulled. The reason behind that. Privacy invasion. It seems as though AVG decided that users aren't that savvy enough at the moment, hence injecting some spyware into their software package which ironically, claims it protects users from spyware and other forms of malicious software.

Lil Wayne sets new iTunes sales record

Lil Wayne sets new iTunes sales record

Rapper Lil Wayne is never too far away from the limelight ever since he made it big just before the turn of the century, and I must say that this is one heavily tattoed rapper – with a rockin' bod to boot. Well, having been in the ‘game' like forever now, Lil Wayne's 10th studio album actually managed to break the iTunes album sales record – achieving 345,000 copies thereabouts in just four days. Compare that to the 964,000 figure that Nielsen SoundScan compiled in a week, and you have a more than decent album (Tha Carter IV) flying off store shelves.

VP Biden loves Cadillac CTS-V, regrets Secret Service won't let him drive his Corvette

Vice President Joe Biden has held plenty of high-profile jobs in his lifetime, but at his core, he's a lot like any of us. That's because he's a die-hard auto enthusiast with a list of cars to back up his love of the auto. Car and Driver recently sat down with the VP to talk cars, and it turns out that the life-long politician knows more than a thing or two about autos. Biden, the son of a car salesman, still owns a Goodwood-green 1967 Corvette 327 that he appears to be quite fond of. Unfortunately, the Secret Service won't let him drive that dreamy Vette; something that Biden says he hates about his job.

Apple Files Another Suit Against Samsung, This Time in Japan

Apple Files Another Suit Against Samsung, This Time in Japan

Apple, it seems, won’t be happy until it has systematically wiped Samsung’s Android efforts from the face of the earth. As part of the company’s continuing proxy war against Google yet another lawsuit has been filed, this time in Japan, with the intention to halt sales of the patent-infringing Galaxy S in the Land of the Rising Sun. The Cupertino-based smartphone maker also seeks to recover damages to the tune of  ¥100 million (~$1.3 million). The court room dramatics are already underway as of Wednesday, though neither company has commented on this most recent case of alleged intellectual property theft.

Turns out that Car and Driver was wrong about Kia's upcoming rear-wheel-drive concept for Frankfurt being called the Veredus. The pulp and ink mag itself stumbled upon a bevy of newly leaked images showing Kia's four-door coupe concept, and lo and behold, one of them reveals what this car will actually be called: GT. One of the images is a nice elevated rear 3x4 shot that shows a decorative license plate bearing the "GT" moniker. The new photos also reveal more of the car's design than we could tell from the aggressively cropped set that Kia distributed last month.

The machine, which will slot in above the current CTS in the automaker's lineup, is rumored to be headed to market with a 2013 model-year designation, and, if that's the case, it could very well be hitting dealers in the fall of 2012. GM head honcho Mark Reuss recently spent some time behind the wheel of a preproduction ATS sedan, and he brought along a video crew to commemorate the event.

It's been said that absence makes a heart grow fonder, so it was with very willing and eager hands this week that we received the Droid Bionic, Motorola's latest high-octane, robot-themed assault in Verizon Wireless subscribers. The phone was first announced at CES in the beginning of 2011 and we got to see it in the flesh just an hour later. but then the story took a turn for the tragic. The Bionic was attacked, killed and then reborn with all new internals.
Phoenix-like, the thing is now available for purchase on Verizon Wireless, $300 for a supposedly top-shelf device that packs both LTE connectivity and a dual-core processor.

In a move that will undoubtedly shock no one, Apple has filed a new complaint against Samsung in Japan alleging that multiple Samsung devices infringe on its patents. The Cupertino-based patent crusader is seeking to ban sales of Samsung's GALAXY S and GALAXY S II lines of smartphones, as well as its original GALAXY Tab Android tablet, Reuters reports. The report does not mention the GALAXY Tab 10.1, which is often the target of Apple's patent complaints in other regions.

My first thought when we heard about HTC investing in Beats Technology, was that those headphones that come with HTC devices, would be updated to something more high end. I have so many of the stock HTC headphones, never opened sitting in their original packaging, and that's the way they will stay. The deal with Beats doesn't just include a third party headphone, it is meant to incorporate the supporting software into whatever hardware HTC choose to include it in. Murmurs have suggested a couple of phones we may see the technology included in like the rumoured HTC Runnymede, and the limited edition HTC Sensation.

Lexus confirms LFA Nürburgring record with new footage

The Interwebs were recently aflutter with rumors that Lexus had set a new Nürburgring production car record with its LFA supercar. The Japanese automaker has stepped forward to lend credence those rumors… by producing an official video of the record-breaking 7:14.64 run. That figure represents a mighty quick 20.6-kilometer jaunt, besting efforts put forth by a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R and even a Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Lexus used an even more limited-edition version of its already limited LFA known as the Nürburgring Edition. Only 50 examples are to be built, which represents 1x10th of total planned LFA production.

Doc Brown goes Back to the Future, finds Garbarino electronics store

The DeLorean used in the Back to the Future movie trilogy may be the single most memorable movie vehicle for anyone who grew up in the 1980s (as did the vast majority of the staff here at Autoblog). And so, whenever we hear anything having to do with the car, the movie or its main characters, we sit up and take notice. No surprise, then, that a company may want to make use of all that nostalgia to market itself – apparently, even one based in Argentina that we'd never heard of called Garbarino.
