KCRW launches MALCOLM music service to help indie bands in need

Being a DJ at radio station can be an embarrassment of riches. And really, who's going to listen to you complain about having too much music to listen to. Santa Monica's terrifically wonderful public radio station KCRW is looking to take a little bit of the pain of finding new music for its DJs, with the launch of MALCOLM, a site that lets artists submit their music for consideration - a nice attempt at continued outreach in a medium so dominated by charts and major label interference. Bands can create profiles with images, bios and social media links, alongside up to three tracks.

Facebook CEO gets his first patent on privacy

Patents are the modern weapons of corporate warfare. That is why the social networking giant that is Facebook is beefing up its patent portfolio to seal its place once and for all. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg filed his first patent application six years ago. And after being criticized by examiners for its obviousness, the patent – US patent 8,225,376 – has just been approved by the U.S. Patent Trademark and Office. The patent is called “Dynamically Generating a Privacy Summary” and it has been revised a couple of times before approval.

Shocker! Three's unlimited data adopters use lots of 3G

Three, a UK mobile network provider specializing in unlimited data packages, has reported that its customers are talking full advantage of their plans. Specifically, the average monthly usage has more than doubled this summer (we use the term loosely) from 450MB to 1.1GB over the same period last year. Smartphone users are understandably the healthiest eaters, sucking down around 1.5GB per month. With the BBC continuing to expand its 3G offerings and an undoubted increase in tablet use, tethering and the like, we imagine these figures are far from their peak.

Remember yesterday we reported that thanks to an exploit, it was discovered that the Wizard class could essentially achieve invulnerability, thus allowing players to go on a rampage without fear of dying (hello Hardcore mode!). Safe to assume Blizzard worked quickly to squash that bug and have since rolled out a hotfix to address the issue, and releasing a statement at the same time:. “We are currently rolling out a hotfix for a recent bug regarding invulnerable Wizards.

Zynga's Farmville turned into a card game

As though having millions of people on the internet hooked onto Farmville isn't enough, it looks like Zynga is out to grab more players – this time in the physical games market. According to reports online, Zynga has been forging deals with toy companies and retailers to bring its virtual games into the real world. One such game being developed with Hasbro is called Farmville Memory, a card game for ages four and up. Not much about the card game has been revealed but the word “Memory” in its title is probably a hint at the sort of gameplay it involves.

Well, Samsung has something up its sleeve, we know that much. Whether or not we're looking at a new Note remains to be seen, but it's safe to assume Sammy will update its phablet line as it approaches its first birthday. So it's no wonder people's suspicions were piqued when a mysterious device made a brief appearance at GLBenchmark.com with the model number GT-N7100. The original Note was N7000, so obviously many are guessing this unnamed Ice Cream Sandwich device is its successor. All the details have since been pulled, but PhoneArena managed to snag a screenshot.

Researchers develop femtosecond laser that can diagnose, blast cancerous tumors

Researchers at the University of Tennessee's Center for Laser Applications have developed a femtosecond laser that can non-invasively diagnose, map, irradiate and burn cancerous tumors. Utilizing a beam that pulses at one-quadrillionth of a second, the technology is able to seek out growths and obliterate them with an increased burst of intensity. "Using ultra-short light pulses gives us the ability to focus in a well confined region and the ability for intense radiation," says Associate Professor of Physics Christian Parigger.

Human head gumball machine grosses me out

Human head gumball machine grosses me out

Now this is a gumball machine from the depths of imagination of Thomas Kuebler who has clearly watched far too many zombie flicks for his own good. It does look extremely realistic, although I would say that this is closer to one of those preserved heads that headhunting tribes keep as trophies than a full blown zombie who deserves Project Alice to bust open a can of whoop-ass. After all, the visually decomposing human head that you see here is a gumball machine, where all the delicious gumballs can be seen through the transparent glass at where the brain is supposed to be.

Toshiba slot-in BDXL recorders debut in Japan

I clearly remember the Blu-ray vs HD DVD war many moons ago, and in the end, Sony's Blu-ray format won the battle – but how has the uptake for Blu-ray movies been so far. DVDs certainly still rule the roost in many parts of the world, mainly thanks to the cost of converting your entire movie library into the Blu-ray format. Well, Toshiba has since jumped over to the Blu-ray divide, and they now debut a couple of slim slot-in BDXL recorders known as the BDR-Z260 and BDR-Z250. The two of them will come in a slim design as mentioned above, where Toshiba claims that they are 64% more compact compared to its predecessors.

Following the devices two weeks ago, some users are reportedly experiencing problems with its GPS functionality, even with a satellite nearby. If you've been experiencing GPS issues on your Galaxy Nexus, you might want to confirm if you're affected by opening an app like Google Maps and try to check the notification for a GPS message.

And it would appear that she's grown a bit impatient, following a Samsung move that she's labeled as "just ridiculous." According to a Bloomberg report, the trial began with Samsung's attorney stating that Apple refused to pay a fee to license three patents related to 3G data transmission. Apple's counsel, however, explained that the company did offer to pay, but Samsung refused.

Wireless audio bridging isn't anything new by itself — we know at least one rival that might say it's old hat — but the company is promising clean and powerful sound through a built-in DAC that can drive even the beefiest of BeoLabs, like the 2,500-watt BeoLab 5.
