Would Instagram have been better off in Twitter's hands?

Would Instagram have been better off in Twitter's hands?

. Instagram's Android release recently shook the Android (and iOS) ecosystem. A huge number of users had been waiting for the image filtering and sharing app to reach Android devices. But such release was overshadowed by the news that were to come some days later. Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion, an acquisition that upset many users.

The main complain was that Facebook has a rather bad reputation with image politics. The social network giant holds rights over any image uploaded to users' profiles, whether it is a simple memory or a master piece.

LG Optimus LTE gets renamed as Optimus True HD LTE

LG Optimus LTE gets renamed as Optimus True HD LTE

. A device name change is usually due to two reasons. Either it is getting something extra, or it is done for marketing reasons. The LG Optimus LTE has already reached major countries (Spectrum and Nitro in the US), but the South Korean found a good way to hit Samsung by changing the device’s name.
The device will now be named as the LG Optimus True HD LTE. But what exactly does this mean? One would expect the device to have a higher resolution. Maybe even a 1080p resolution, which is considered “real HD” by many.

Wheels of Destruction combines first-person shooters with futuristic cars

There's nothing unusual about vehicles in first-person shooters – Rage has its Jetter and Cuprino, Battlefield 3 has two entire classes of wheeled vehicles – but there's usually still a person involved. But what about when your vehicle is your shooter. Then you have the PS3 game Wheels of Destruction World Tour, which is essentially Death Race 2 without the felons and bad acting. There are three classes in the arcade-style game: Scout, Heavy and Assassin.

Aside from the recently unveiled One line of Android smartphones, HTC is also getting ready to launch a lower-end device in the future. It's codename for now is HTC Golf, and we first heard about its existence last month. Today an official-looking press render of the Golf has been leaked to PocketNow. Golf won't be the name it will be sold under. Rather, it seems that HTC will call it Wildfire C. It will stand just below the HTC One V in the Taiwanese company's 2012 portfolio.

The Wildfire C will apparently arrive in stores before the end of June.

Facebook QR code ends up on the roof

Facebook, the world's largest social network and with plenty of cash at their disposal (having picked up Instagram for $1 billion recently), continues to make waves in the industry, with one of the more light hearted moments involving painting the company's headquarter's roof with a gigantic QR code which can be seen from high above the sky. This is what occurred at its “Space Hackathon,” which is a mini-celebration as the last of its employees have finally made the move to the new Menlo Park headquarters.

The Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe Black Series is a whole lotta car. Not only is the name a mouthful, but the 510-horsepower German rocket can be a handful too, well, in the wrong hands. This wouldn't be the first time we've seen techs or valets getting their kicks behind the wheel of a vehicle that doesn't belong to them, but it seems some employees at one Ottawa-area dealer didn't get the memo. Our tipster claims that a couple rogue techs at a dealership called Star Motors (formerly Carling Motors) decided to take out one of the 30 existing Black Series in Canada for a joyride.

NADA: 7 million car buyers to be pushed out of the market by fuel economy rules

If the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration makes its proposed 2025 fuel economy standards official, cars are going to be more expensive, and that's going to shut millions of buyers out, argues the National Automobile Dealers Association. "If the price of a vehicle goes up by the government estimate of almost $3,000," says David Wagner, an analyst for the NADA Used Car Guide, "millions of people will no longer be able to finance a new vehicle." The proposed standard is aiming for an average of 54.5 mpg for both cars and trucks by 2025, and is predicted to add $2,000 to the cost of a vehicle.

NASA to harvest sun's energy with huge ‘margarita glass'

Our solar system's sun is a force to be reckoned with, and NASA intends to harvest the sun's energy with their latest idea – a gargantuan ‘margarita glass', which in essence, is a solar panel that will float around in space. It will be made out of thousands of curved mirrors, soaking up the sun's rays many thousands of miles above the earth, beaming this energy down to our planet where power stations will then “process” the energy and send it to our homes. Known as the SPS-ALPHA machine, it could very well offer a far greener future as we reduce our dependence on coal as well as nuclear powered plants here.

There is a new rumor going around that struggling smartphone manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM), who churns out the once hugely popular (still is in the White House) BlackBerry smartphone, might just sell a huge stake to software giant Microsoft. Long, long ago, when we first put our grubby hands on a driver's license, someone passed on a bit of sage wisdom: in the wrong hands, a car can be more dangerous than any gun. The video after the jump is a keen reminder of this fact. Autoblog reader Vasiliy tells us the individual in the kamikaze SUV seen here allegedly brought his new purchase back to the dealership to have a faulty shock replaced. When the dealer refused to do the work, the man decided to take the issue into his own hands by ramming his Suzuki through the front glass and into multiple Nissan vehicles parked in the showroom.

A palm reading cash machine might not tell you your fortune, but it will, at least, dispense some of it. Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank in Japan has revealed that it will introduce the nation's first ATM that lets you withdraw money just by scanning your palm. This isn't the first ATM to use extra human verification, but it claims it's the first that functions without the need for your cash card. Customers will need to pop in to a branch to provide some manual verification - and of course a palm scan - then you're away. The bank hopes this will help people access their cash in the event of losing your card, or a natural disaster.
