Dundee student designs Passive Play toy cube to stimulate parents interaction with autistic children

A University of Dundee scholar has been working on a wonderful tool that aims to evoke the emotional connection between autistic children and their parents. While we've seen novelties like the My Keepon in the past, any addition to the cause is always a pleasant one, and the Passive Play's no exception. The concept comes in the form of an interactive toy cube for the kid (pictured above), which pairs up with an iOS app and allows the parent to see any interaction the little one is having with the device.

We just attended a thorough workshop covering the tech inside the next Audi A3, the new compact from Ingolstadt that the U.S. gets in October 2013 as a five-door Sportback model, as well as a new four-door small sedan. A concept version of the four-door was shown at the Geneva Motor Show last year, while deliveries of this European hatchback start this July. This completely new version of the A3 – now in its third generation having sold 2.7 million units worldwide since 1996 – is using the new VW Group MQB architecture, or "tranverse modular system" platform.

Orange UK launches registration page for Intel-based Santa Clara smartphone

Intel announced their plans for mobile phones last year that will be powered by the company's Medfield chipset. So far it seems that the first Intel-based smartphone has been launched in India as the Lava XOLO X900, but what happened to the Orange Santa Clara that was designated for the UK market. The good news for UK residents is that the carrier Orange has since launched a registration page for the Santa Clara. The website has also revealed that the Santa Clara will not be the device's official name and that it is merely the "pre-launch" name for the handset.

T-Mobile USA Galaxy S3: The Only U.S Quad-Core Galaxy S3?

T-Mobile USA Galaxy S3: The Only U.S Quad-Core Galaxy S3?

In case you missed the Samsung event that officially launched the Samsung Galaxy S3, you can check our preview of the phone. Of course, you have seen that the Samsung Galaxy S3, as presented on stage, featured a quad-core chip, most likely a Samsung Exynos. However, that smartphone was also likely to have been an HSPA+ device, and not a 4G LTE device. And in the absence of an Exynos chip with built-in 4G LTE, Samsung would have to use 1/an Exynos with an external 4G LTE modem or 2/a non-Samsung dual-core chip, if it wants to ship an LTE quad-core phone to Verizon and AT&T.

Apple's not gonna like this one, but news of the perpetual cat-and-mouse game between it and the hacking community continues with the announcement of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.1, which is now alive and kicking on the iPhone 4. The good news went out in the form of a tweet from pod2g, and while the naughty bit of software isn't yet available for public download, we can only hope that it'll soon be ready for mass consumption. As you'll recall, we last saw hints of an untethered jailbreak for the latest iPad (also iOS 5.1), which similarly remains elusive to the public.

Look at it as a city-building game like CityVille in just a single building. Tiny Tower is a charming and enjoyable game app that lets you build a tiny skyscraper and manage the businesses and citizens that inhabit it. The game starts with you in control of the tower, with each floor being either a residential block or a business. The building's citizen–or “Bitizens” as they are called–can mill about on each business floor and only five of them can live in a residential floor.

'Dogs in Cars' will cheer you up

Having a ruff day on the road. Don't take it out on other drivers, do what dogs do when they're out for a ride. Director Keith Hopkin takes to California's highways and byways and films eight dogs "doing what they love to do," he says on his Vimeo channel. The video captures that pure enjoyment of a dog's nose in the wind, the sun on his fur and not having a care in the world. There's even a slow motion montage where each dog closes his eyes, smiles and dreams of bacon.

Perhaps one of the best moments is at 1:04 when Beans the dog rides past a Bugatti Veyron and checks it out.

Samsung officially introduces the Samsung Galaxy S III

Welp, it's official: the phone we've all been waiting for has been officially announced in London today. The Samsung Galaxy S III (nope, not S3, or anything else) is being touted as the biggest launch of the year as it houses an 8 megapixel 1080p HD camera, a 1.9 megapixel front camera, 16-64GB of internal storage, a microSD card slot, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, a 4.8 inch 720p AMOLED display, and more. And though the press release doesn't mention it, there should be a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos inside with 1GB of RAM to tag along. It has a 2,100 mAh battery to help keep it going all day (though we admittedly expected more).

We've seen solar panels utilize spinach which was used to replace the more expensive silicon components, and if going green is your thing, you might be interested to hear that scientists at the University of Southern California have managed to develop a new type of solar cell made from nanocrystals that are apparently so small, you would be able to fit 250 billion of them onto the head of a pin. Thanks to their size, these nanocrystals can be made into an ink and painted or printed onto clear surfaces, thus allowing solar cells to be printed on materials like plastic that can be bent and shaped to fit just about anywhere.

Lookout Mobile Security discovered some websites that have been designed in such a way that they only attack and infect Android devices on which the pages are loaded on. The websites which have not been identified publicly yet, operate as "drive-by malware vectors" and if an Android device visits the webpage knowingly or otherwise without being fully patched up, the alleged malware will automatically install itself onto your device unbeknownst to the user.

Mobile security firm Lookout reports that Android users have been the victim of “drive-by” attacks that see hacked websites sideloading malicious apps onto their devices. The method of infection, which is most commonly used to target PC users and only recently starting to crop up on mobile devices, uses an embedded iframe to trigger an HTML script that automatically pushes a trojan dubbed NotCompatible. Users are prompted to install the app, which appears as a normal system update.
