Samsung ships twice the smartphones as Apple in Q3 2012

Samsung and Apple are definitely not the best of buddies at this point in time, considering how their working relationship has frayed in the past year after throwing lawsuits against one another. Well, the latest news report showed that Samsung did ship twice the number of smartphones compared to Apple in the third quarter of the year, helping them retained the lead position in both handset and smartphone shipments. Senior analyst Michael Morgan said, "Samsung looks to be running away from the pack while Apple's new product portfolio continues to eat into its decreasing gross margins.

If anyone is going to get their hands on new Nexus hardware first, it's going to be Google top-brass. So when photos from Senior Vice President of Engineering, Vic Gundotra, show up on his Google + with "Nexus 10" in the details, we pay attention. The pictures show some idyllic scenes from the beach, but what we're all interested in is the EXIF data. So, 2,046 by 1,536 you say. That's 3-megapixel by our calculations, which may not be the true original resolution of the image of course.

Apple publishes 'Samsung did not copy' statement through gritted teeth

Whatever you think of the continual legal tussles between Apple and Samsung, a UK court's decision to force the former into publicly acknowledging that the latter did not copy its design will have seemed a little egregious even to the most ardent sammy-sympathiser. Well, that post is now live - on Apple's site at least - and as you might expect, is studiously manicured to almost not feel like an acknowledgement at all. The opening legalese notes that Samsung did not infringe "registered design No. 0000181607-0001," before going on to point out in perfect lay-terms the positive comments Judge Colin Birss made about its own slates.

When it comes to corporate social responsibility, companies do have a department dedicated to ensure that the less fortunate and in need of help in this world will be given a hand. Samsung is one of them, and recently they shared about assisting a village in South Africa by turning it into a solar-powered Internet school. Warner, Redbox agree to 28 day delay on disc rentals, UltraViolet support for Redbox Instant

Redbox and Warner Bros. were at odds in January when Warner wanted to extend the window before discs hit kiosks to 56 days, but now the two have come to an agreement that keeps it at a 28 day delay. When their previous deal expired Redbox said it would find other ways to obtain discs and offer them day and date to its customers, although actually finding them in kiosks could be tough. The new two-year deal covers movies that debut after January 1st, 2013, and claims to improve economics for both Warner (which has apparently seen fit to eliminate the delay entirely for brick & mortar renters) and Redbox.

While that's more than the $160 million it pulled in in the second quarter, it's a little off the $270 million it made in the same period last year.

It's the sort of ceremony that's so magical it can only occur on even-numbered years. Inventors, educators, entertainers, college students and media folk gathered at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA tonight for the 2012 inductions to the Robot Hall of Fame, a Carnegie Mellon-sponsored event created to celebrate the best of our mechanical betters. This year, the field included four categories, judged by both a jury of 107 writers, designs, entrepreneurs and academics and the public at large, each faction constituting half the voting total.

Nikon 1 V2 unveiled: 14.2 megapixel ILC shoots 15fps stills for $899.95 in November

It was just over a year ago when Nikon first dipped its toe into mirrorless waters with its first two 1 System cameras, the V1 and J1. Now, the company has released the V1's successor, the aptly named V2. Like its elders, the V2 has a 1200fps slo-mo capture mode, a 3-inch LCD display on the back, a high-res (1.4 million dot) electronic viewfinder, and does 1080x30p and 1080x60i video capture (Alas, 4K recording capability didn't make the cut). Unlike the V1, the V2 comes in only black or white and uses an upgraded 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor with an ISO range of 160-6,400.

Apple's Oct. 23rd event roundup: iPad mini, 4th gen iPad, new iMac, 13-inch MBP with Retina Display and more

Apple teased that it had "a little more to show" us prior to today's San Francisco event, but it's clear now that the phrasing was humble at best. Not only has the much-anticipated, rumored and leaked 7.9-inch iPad mini been officially revealed, but so has a smattering of new and refreshed offerings across its range of gizmos. The standard iPad is seeing its fastest refresh yet (about six months) to a Lighting port and A6X-packing fourth-generation model, and the iMac has ditched its optical drive to go Air-thin in its Ivy Bridge-driven seventh-generation.

Renault shows DCross Concept in Brazil

Renault shows DCross Concept in Brazil

The São Paulo Motor Show continues to heat up and bring us interesting new vehicle unveilings. Next year, we may have to tough it out and trek down to Brazil for the 28th edition of the auto show. The most recent development from São Paulo is the Renault DCross concept. In what appears to be a gussied-up Dacia Duster, the DCross gets a bright green and matte black paint scheme, a raised ride height, roof racks and a spare tire atop the concept. If off-roading is your thing, the DCross, at the very least, looks the part.

Little else is given in details other than what we can gather from the photos.

8GB Nexus 7 no longer in available at Google Play store

8GB Nexus 7 no longer in available at Google Play store

Google seems to have run out of the 8GB version of its Nexus 7 tablet. Sometime today, the $200 slate went from "In Stock" to "Coming Soon", with the Play store giving would-be purchasers the option to sign up for an email notification when it becomes available once again. Might this be a case of demand exceeding supply, or could the least capacious Nexus 7 be on the outs - making way for a forthcoming 32GB version. No one outside of Mountain View can say for sure, but odds are favorable we'll find out at next week's Android event.

Fourth generation iPad revealed

Fourth generation iPad revealed

The fourth generation iPad has been announced, where it is touted to be a “powerhouse” that carries with it an A6X processor which essentially doubles the previous CPU and graphics performance, delivering iPhone 5 levels on a tablet form factor. Not only that, Apple has included the new image signal processor that is found in the iPhone 5 on the new iPad, that still proudly delivers 10 hours of battery life. The FaceTime camera is, as expected, now been bumped up to 720p, while a Lightning connector and dual-band Wi-Fi rounds off the list of specifications.

New iPad display seen, carries upgraded FaceTime camera

New iPad display seen, carries upgraded FaceTime camera

BGR has gotten hold of some pretty exclusive images of what they claim is the new iPad, and what you see above would be its new display assembly. Some of the more noticeable changes as listed by BGR include a larger cutout for its front-facing camera compared to its predecessor, and that can only mean one of two things: it is an engineering mistake, or Apple wants to throw in a larger sensor, and the smart money would be on the second option. Apple will most probably be using the 1.2 megapixel FaceTime HD camera that can be found in the iPhone 5 and iPod touch.

The Translogic team took some time to swing by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory recently to chat with Ann Devereaux, the deputy lead for entry, descent and landing for Curiosity, the Mars science lab. If anyone knows what it takes to to move a project like Curiosity from concept to touch down, it's her. Over the course of the quick segment on the rover program, host Bradley Hasemeyer learns about the extensive real-world testing that went into bringing the rover to life as well as the staggering amount of computer modeling it took to prepare for the rover's descent.

Samsung Display to quit as Apple supplier in 2013

Samsung Display to quit as Apple supplier in 2013

Samsung picked up the slack where others failed to a few years ago when it came to supplying displays for Cupertino's range of portable devices, and even until today, they remain as the largest Apple screen supplier, shipping 15 million panels over to Apple in the first six months of 2012 alone. In the second half, however, the picture was not all that rosy, where Samsung shipped under the 3 million figure mark to Apple, and one can only postulate that the fourth quarter shipment is going to suffer even further – perhaps 1.5 million or less.

LG exec claims Nexus due at October 29th event, ships to India one month later

It's either a premature confirmation or one of the larger executive gaffes we've seen in recent memory, but it's hard to ignore. LG's Mobile Product Planning lead for India, Amit Gujral, just claimed in an interview with IBNLivethat the "LG Nexus" will launch at Google's October 29th event and ship to India "by the end of November." He even stuck his neck out to offer specifications - the Nexus will reportedly have a very Optimus G-like 4.7-inch screen and quad-core 1.5GHz chip while throwing the unreleased Android 4.2 into the equation.
