Verizon sends invitations to closed trial of FiOS TV app for iOS with live streaming

Want to know the definition of frustration. Try being teased with a FiOS TV app that supports live streaming, only to be denied when the app shows up. The end to that (admittedly mild) form of torture may be in sight. Engadget has learned through a tip that Verizon is sending invitations among a limited group to test a new FiOS TV iOS app with the usual schedule browsing, DVR control. oh, and live TV. Flex View On Demand videos and local media should be on tap as well, although it's not clear whether or not any of the options will require an active link to Verizon's fiber or cellular networks to watch.

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 getting Android 4.0 ICS soon. Galaxy S III ready for an update, too

Verizon has let the world know that its Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is finally going to receive an official update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The update is "coming soon", and is detailed here at Verizon. Another Samsung Android device that will get a software update soon is the Galaxy S III. Of course, this already runs Android ICS, so the update won't change the Android version (although 4.1 Jelly Bean is definitely coming later this year). What you will get with this update is a fixed "No SIM" error message, plus Verizon's Remote Diagnostic Tool, and improved S Beam data connectivity.

Researchers take full control of cockroach's movement, turn it into a wireless sensor

Built-in power supply. Check. Ability to survive anything. Check. Easy to control? Okay, anyone who's had a cockroach as an uninvited houseguest knows that's not the case. So, rather than re-inventing the biological wheel with a robotic version, North Carolina State university researchers have figured out a way to remotely control a real Madagascar hissing cockroach. They used an off-the-shelf microcontroller to tap in to the roach's antennae and abdomen, then sent commands that fooled the insect into thinking danger was near, or that an object was blocking it.

Huawei Ascend D1 quad-core flagship ships on September 12th. Will cost $425 in China

Waiting for the Huawei's Ascend D1 flagship, running on its own proprietary quad-core CPU, was like waiting for Godot. Announced in February during Mobile World Congress, called Ascend D Quad at the time, and promised to ship in the first half of 2011, the new smartphone made quite a splash during the trade show. With Huawei's K3V2 quad-core 1.5 GHz CPU and 4.5x1280×720 330 ppi IPS display, it was the best specc'ed Android device in Barcelona.
However, few months after the announcement, Huawei learned that creating its own mobile CPU from scratch, and getting it into production, is not so easy.

There are few places where you can wander through a single collection and see the vintage Rolls-Royce pictured sharing floor space with a Ferrari 308 GTB, an original Mini, a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster and a Ducati. With 3,500 cars of its own, plus 350 cars donated by private collectors and companies, it might lay claim to being the Smithsonian of American automobilia. There's a short video with more of the goodness below.

It's gone through quite a few minor revisions as of late, but Apple has today taken the wraps off a fairly big redesign of not just iTunes for OS X and Windows, but iOS devices as well. The latter will be making its debut with iOS 6 on the 19th, and you can expect a simpler interface in all incarnations - "dramatically simpler," according to Apple's Eddie Cue - with a carousel up top paired with a flattened grid of icons below. The desktop version also sports a new mini player, which now boasts search functionality while staying decidedly minimalistic, and a new "Up Next" feature lets you cue up songs and see what's coming at a glance.

Mini Paceman photos leaked ahead of debut

In most cases, when a car is leaked by a manufacturer, it is done by accident. Say, a toy manufacturer gets ahold of schematics to make a replica, or perhaps it is inadvertently placed in the background of a promotional video. Either way, seldom does an automaker intentionally leak photos of an upcoming product on its own. But when it comes to the Paceman, it looks like Mini has been going in the other direction.

NexPhone Combines the functionality of smartphone, tablet, laptop and PC

With so many tech gadgets available today, it often becomes hard to keep track of all the data across all these devices. For your 24x7 work, you need to have a smartphone. A laptop needed for more professional tasks whereas a tablet has to be there to be carried along. Finally, a PC is also a must-have for some heavy-duty work and hard-core gaming.
Asus tried to come up with an apt solution when it unveiled its PadFone. PadFone is essentially a smartphone-tablet-laptop.

BitGym Motion SDK brings Kinect-style games to Android and iOS, no huge living room required (video)

If there's a common barrier to playing with a Kinect controller, it's free space. The sheer amount of necessary distance between sensor and player is fine for suburbanites with expansive living rooms, but not so hot for apartment dwellers. Thankfully, BitGym is doing its best to bring hands-free gaming to small spaces with a new Motion SDK for Android and iOS developers. The kit takes advantage of the front cameras on phones and tablets to track three-axis movement, leans and multiple players without any special hardware - and without necessarily rearranging the furniture.
