Dacia Duster to spawn inexpensive Nissan Terrano, will we get it?

Dacia Duster to spawn inexpensive Nissan Terrano, will we get it?

When going to overseas auto shows, one can't help but spend an inordinate amount of time eyeballing forbidden automotive fruit. It's often of the seriously rare, criminally powerful and six- or seven-digit variety. But more often than one might think, the genuinely affordable overseas hero makes us swoon, too. So it is with the Dacia/Renault Duster, the cheap-as-chips, hard-wearing utility vehicle.

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday!

Japanese Technology from the Future Friday!

This week it's all nuclear: Japan continues international outreach with the very nuclear-friendly French (this year's outreach began with Turkey and the UAE), and a UN science committee has determined that the Fukushima disaster is highly unlikely to cause increased levels of cancer among those living nearby. Troubling news for the logic-challenged anti-nuclear contingent. Welcome to Japanese Technology from the Future Friday:
It's already Friday west of the international dateline - here in Japan, it's totally the future.

Meet Points, the Internet-enabled future of street signs

Meet Points, the Internet-enabled future of street signs

After three years of research, Breakfast Products has introduced Points - self-touted as the most advanced sign on earth. While we cannot substantiate that particular claim, the three-arm directional display is an interesting and innovative approach when it comes to delivering information to those within its immediate vicinity. In a nutshell, Points utilizes an Internet connection to update a five-segment interface menu that is located at user height on its pole.

Sony Xperia Z Google Edition rumored for July

Sony Xperia Z Google Edition rumored for July

A couple of months ago, this wouldn't even seem possible. Top smartphones from the top manufacturers, but running stock Android from the moment you buy them. And with updates issued by Google. A geek's dream, right. Well, not anymore. First there was the Samsung Galaxy S4. Then the HTC One joined it. And now the Sony Xperia Z is rumored to be the next handset to get its very own Google Edition. Or Nexus Edition. Or Nexus Experience. Whatever you want to call it.

Keep in mind though that this is nothing but a rumor at this point. And not one that comes from a source that's been reliable in the past.

Nissan has given its popular Micra a substantial refresh. Completely revised fascias front and rear join small sheetmetal tweaks for an all-new look, and Nissan says buyers can expect to find a host of new technology indoors. That includes audio USB and AUX-in slots as well as a new audio and touchscreen navigation system with a larger display. Designers have also graced the model – known in some markets as the Nissan March – with a revised center console and new trim indoors.

Meizu M035 Image Leaked

Meizu M035 Image Leaked

Today is a rather strange day indeed, especially when you consider the number of leaks that have occurred concerning smartphones in the market. We have seen the Nokia EOS images leaked (allegedly of course), as well as the HTC Mini One not to mention the ZTE Mustang and Sprint Vital yesterday. Well, why not add yet another model to the mix in the form of the Meizu M035. The Meizu M035 is an upcoming smartphone device from the folks over at Meizu of China, where it has been given the codename Charm Blue in the process. Images of it have already started to make their way online, where it will come with a 4-inch display.

Chrysler defies NHTSA, says it won't recall 2.7M Jeep Grand Cherokee, Liberty models

Chrysler defies NHTSA, says it won't recall 2.7M Jeep Grand Cherokee, Liberty models

Facing a possible recall totaling around 2.7 million of its most popular SUVs, Chrysler remains insistent that the 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberty are safe vehicles. This comes on the heels of a recall request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for these two models due to fuel tanks mounted behind the rear axle, which could possibly be ruptured during severe rear-end collisions, leading to an increased risk of fire. In response to the allegations, Chrysler says that it does not agree with NHTSA nor does it plan on recalling either vehicle.

Patriot Unveils Fuel+ Line Of Mobile Charging Devices

Patriot Unveils Fuel+ Line Of Mobile Charging Devices

For the most part, a lot of smartphones out there today will probably give you a full day's worth of use before running out of battery, maybe even two days for the extra frugal users, but for the heavy users, if you're constantly running out of juice before the afternoon is out, Patriot has unveiled their Fuel+ series of mobile chargers which will allow you to charge your mobile device on the go. If you're wondering why the name sounds familiar, it's because it is the same Patriot who makes high-performance memory chips, so that should say something about them.

2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (video)

2014 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter (video)

Ready To Battle Others Of Its Own Kind. To the casual van observer, there are likely three seminal categories of big-box hauler. 1) The white Ford Econoline. 2) The decades-old conversion vans made by various manufacturers, with a porthole, an angel and a unicorn floating in an airbrushed rendition of the cosmos. 3) The European van, up until recently embodied solely in the form of the Mercedes-Benz (or Dodge or Freightliner) Sprinter.

It's the latter we flew to Germany to drive, the 2014 model year adding a new standard engine and transmission, new safety tech and a finespun redesign.

Smart Health LifeTrak Core C200 activity tracker review

Smart Health LifeTrak Core C200 activity tracker review

The Smart Health LifeTrak Core C200 is the 3rd activity tracker / pedometer that I've reviewed so far this year. This device differs from the Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up (see links in the related reviews section below) by price and connectivity. I didn't think I would be that impressed, but have been surprised by how much I like this tracker. Although it lacks syncing capability, it makes up for it in ease of use and one really cool advanced feature. Let's take a look.

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

The LifeTrak comes with what you see here and a short information guide. There are no syncing cables, chargers, etc.

Eye-Fi simplifies getting your pictures from your camera to your mobile device

We've reviewed several Eye-Fi cards at The Gadgeteer.  They are a great way to add WiFi capabilities to a camera that doesn't have it already, and they greatly simplify getting your pictures to your computer for editing and storage.  What if you'd rather have them transfer directly to your smart phone or tablet.  Eye-Fi cards can make that possible, but the new Mobi card makes setting up a personal WiFi connection between the card and your device as simple as possible.

Russian bear hit by car, exits gracefully

Russian bear hit by car, exits gracefully

It's hard not to feel sorry for the bear in the video below. The poor critter gets nailed pretty hard while ambling across a Russian highway. Despite an impact at what looks to be at least 40 miles per hour, the big bear does his best impression of a breakdancer before shrugging off the hit and scampering for the hills. There's no telling what sort of internal damage the animal suffered due to the collision, but we imagine the offending car didn't get away so easily.

May 2013: Coming Up Roses Edition

May 2013: Coming Up Roses Edition

Nissan, Ford, Chrysler Lead Gains, Subaru Sets All-Time Record. April showers sure do have May sales flowering this year. The numbers for last month are in, and generally speaking, the US market was strong with most automakers reporting higher sales than a year ago. Of those that were in the red, most were only down in the single-digit percent range, and Mitsubishi is a mainstay near the bottom these days thanks to a number of models that left production in the last year.
