Samsung Galaxy S III rooted, sort of

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been rooted ahead of launch…sort of. A developer going by the alias of Chainfire has successfully achieved root with the device's release candidate firmware but never even had GS3 in hand. Instead he took advantage of a leaked software build and did the rooting virtually. The good news is that if Samsung doesn't make any adjustments to the phone's kernel rooting will be an easy process once users have the new Galaxy in hand.

NHK and JVC develop 120fps Super Hi-Vision projector

If your cine-cave is already decked out with the Super Hi-Vision display, the Super Hi-Vision camera, and the Super Hi-Vision-supping antenna, we guess you just need the 120fps Super Hi-Vision projector to complete the set. Guess what. Working with JVC, NHK has developed just that. It might not be much to look at, but that hunk of tech up there comes with the extra frame rate that also makes it play fast nice with the sensor technology NHK was kind enough to develop first.

Amazon rumored to launch 10.1″ Kindle Fire in Q3 2012

Rumors of a new Amazon Kindle Fire arriving this year have been running rampant. Granted it's not out of the question for Amazon to refresh the Kindle Fire's hardware for 2012, but so far based on the rumors, it seems that Amazon could have either two Kindle Fires planned, or they might only release one. Back in March we reported that Amazon was rumored to launch a 7" and a 10" version of the Kindle Fire, but not too long ago there were reports of an 8.9" Kindle Fire, making us wonder just which piece of rumor made the most sense to us.

ASUS PadFone gets benchmarked: a mere teaser of what's to come

It was only last week that we learned of the varied battery life of ASUS' phone that would be a tablet that would be a laptop. Now, a further trickle of its performance might has passed our way, giving us insight into the real-world chops of its dual-core S4 processor and companion Adreno 225 GPU. The tests, carried out by the fine folks over at Netbooknews, highlight the device's strengths across a swath of the usual benchmarks, putting it just below AT&T's One X variant in Quadrant with a score of 5,057 and Sunspider at 1,917ms.

MaKey, MaKey turns the whole world into a keyboard

The litany of exciting Maker Faire products continues with MaKey MaKey, a device that turns anything capable of conducting electricity into a controller. Developed by MIT Media Lab students Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum, you simply run a bulldog clip from the board to an object and hold a connecting wire in your hand. Connecting over USB, it's entirely programming-free, but if you find your interest piqued, you can flip the board over to use the Arduino module baked into the hardware.

Survey: Most Americans play games on phones to kill time

There is a new 'Y U Play?' survey from MocoSpace that shows the number 1 reason for Americans spending time on their mobile phones would be to “kill time”, while another third play for entertainment's sake. Out of the sample crowd of over 10,000 gamers, 10% of them played games to compete, while lagging a wee bit behind at 9% is the motive of meeting new people. Hmmm, I wonder, isn't heading down to the local watering hole a better way of meeting new folks.

Volvo XC90 to become Geely

Volvo XC90 to become Geely

Volvo recently unveiled yet another model year of the impossibly old XC90 – promised to be the final one before a complete redesign. But the overripe vintage of the first SUV to fall from Volvo's vine isn't stopping corporate parent Geely from absconding with the platform to launch a new high-end brand for China. According to China Car Times, Volvo's new XC90 will be launching in 2014, and after that the original will soldier on in China, at least in some form.

HP to slash 25,000 jobs?

With Greece on the brink of quitting the Eurozone, the world's economy does not seem to be any rosier despite recent austerity measures that were taken. Unless you are Apple with a crazy stock capitalization, chances are your bottomline is also being badly affected, and even behemoths like HP is said to be working on a workforce reduction by 25,000 to 30,000 people, at least according to folks who are familiar with HP's inner wheelings and dealings. These cuts were tipped to be part of the recent decision by top management to merge a couple of its business units, hence making redundant the number of employees by approximately 8%.

A match made in heaven: BlackBerry PlayBook and… Windows Phone? [video]

. What do you get when you cross a struggling vendor's debut tablet with a mobile operating system that has spent the past 18 months running into the brick wall that is Google's Android operating system and Apple's iOS. One Dutch developer seemingly needed to find out, so he ported Microsoft's perpetually-emerging Windows Phone OS onto RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook. The result is a somewhat responsive slate that gives us a look at what will never be; Microsoft is on record in stating that it has no interest in bringing Windows Phone - emphasis on “Phone” - to tablets.

Droid 4 sees first Ice Cream Sandwich build leak

Droid 4 sees first Ice Cream Sandwich build leak

Another Motorola device has seen an early leak of Ice Cream Sandwich, though it is far from the build that should eventually reach handsets. The Android 4.0.4 leak for the Droid 4 comes direct from Moto and is available for installation, but only the more adventurous users need apply. The test build likely needs some more work before it is ready for deployment. Those installing now may fall victim to the tendency for leaks to not so easily revert to manufacturer approved software when flashed with available fastboot files, often resulting in a bricked phone.

Android fragmentation gets visualized, again

Android fragmentation gets visualized, again

. Android's rise to the top of the mobile operating system food chain as measured by device proliferation has been remarkably swift, but not without its drawbacks. Due to the nature of Google's open source OS and its aggressive strategy, smartphone vendors that make use of the platform have each gone their own way with software development, hardware design and other key elements. As a result, Android fragmentation, which might be defined as the spread of diverging versions of the Android OS across devices with varying core characteristics, was born.

Google Music device authorization limit could cause headaches for ROM lovers

Google Music device authorization limit could cause headaches for ROM lovers

Google Music's current allowance of 10 authorized devices to be attached to any one account sounds like plenty for the average user. After a laptop, desktop computer, smartphone, and tablet there are is still plenty of room to work with for the likes of Google TV or additional mobile devices. And should you reach your limit of 10 authorized devices and need to add another, it should be as simple as de-authorizing one you aren't currently using and simply adding the new one, right. Wrong.

Starting from the beginning, the Bimmer's styling has inclined some people to grab their hatchets. Yes, there's a whole lot of intensity and a slumgullion of deeply incised polygons mixed together in that little upright face, but we have no doubt there'll be a whole lot more people grabbing their wallets when they see it.

Google planning to work with multiple OEMs for the next Nexus

Google planning to work with multiple OEMs for the next Nexus

Google is planning on working with multiple OEMs, as many as five, for the next Nexus phone, reports The Wall Street Journal. The phones will all come with the next version of Android (Jelly Bean), will be sold unlocked directly to the customers and will be out by Thanksgiving in the US, just before the holiday season. This is a major step away from the usual way Google operates for multiple reasons. First of all, the customers will have multiple choices for the Nexus phone. Until now you had to settle for whatever the OEM made for you if you wanted a Nexus phone but now if you don't like one, you can get it from some other OEM.
