LG teases that Optimus G will have 768p gapless display, long-lifespan battery

LG must know that word of the Optimus G has been spoiled, even if it's not quite ready to put all its cards on the table. While it's only acknowledging the phone's identity under a 'G' codename, the Korean electronics giant is willing to talk a lot about what's under the hood. Among the truly new revelations: that uncommonly wide 1,280 x 768 screen, now called the G2 Touch Hybrid Display, is a 30 percent thinner gapless panel that puts the LCD right near the glass in a way that just might be familiar to HTC One X owners.

Pioneering astronaut Neil Armstrong dies at 82

It's a story that we hoped we'd never have to report. Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on Earth's Moon, has died at the age of 82 after complications from heart surgery three weeks earlier. His greatest accomplishment very nearly speaks for itself - along with help from fellow NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, he changed the landscape of space exploration through a set of footprints. It's still important to stress his accomplishments both before and after the historic Apollo 11 flight, though.

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line. Carrying an extra camera body just to avoid scrambling for another lens seems a bit silly, no. Quikdraw wants to run that convoluted method out of town with a holster system that lets you carry Canon or Nikon lenses on your belt and change them in around five seconds. The holder start in a locked vertical position, and to attach a lens you just bayonet it into place, securing the glass and allowing the holder to be lowered.

Ducati issues five recalls for 1199 Panigale

Five recall-worthy issues have been discovered on 2,411 units of the 2012 and 2013 Ducati 1199 Panigale. Two of the issues relate to steering, one each center on the exhaust, front brake and rear swingarm. Regarding the steering, too little Loctite was used on screws that fasten the steering damper to the steering head, the result being that they can unscrew themselves completely and deprive the rider of control. The second steering issue is with the Uniball bearing on the Öhlins damper, which could slip out due to an incorrect assembly tolerance and also cause a loss of steering control.

Asus Transformer Pad 300 gets Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in the UK

The Asus Transformer Pad 300 was probably the first non-Nexus device to get updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, thus keeping with the Taiwanese company's tradition of being one of the fastest to issue updates to new OS versions. But the initial rollout, which we told you about last week, was limited to the US. Not anymore, though. Jelly Bean has now trickled across the ocean and arrived in the UK. We can assume that the other European countries are going to be next. Asus UK announced on its Facebook page that the JB update is now rolling out.

As this is an over-the-air update, your tablet will notify you once it reaches it.

September is the new January or February in the mobile world, it seems. At least it is this year. Traditionally, most new mobile device announcements come either in January (during CES) or February (when MWC takes place). But now, September may just become the biggest month of this year in this respect.
Nokia will unveil its Windows Phone lineup on September 5. Motorola will probably announce the Droid RAZR HD and the Droid M on the same date.

We've got news for you, boys and girls, thanks to Freescale's latest announcement of the Xtrinsic 3.0 touchscreen technology that is so sensitive, it is even capable of sensing your swipes and touches through a film of water, now how about that. Of course, we do know that most consumer electronics and water do not mix, but there are exceptions to the rule, and the Freescale Xtrinsic 3.0 would be one of the specially designed ones.

LG Display starts volume production of in-cell touch screens, we have a hunch as to who wants them

Looks like we'll be finding in-cell touch displays in our devices sooner rather than later: LG Display has confirmed that it's been mass-producing the thinner LCDs since earlier in August. CEO Han Sang-beom also notes that manufacturing has been going as smooth as, well, glass. Despite the complexity of building touch input directly into a display, the company expects to keep the supply going “without any fail,” according to the executive. As to who's making the orders. LG Display isn't naming its customers on the record, and production could be as much for its sister company's phones and tablets as anyone else's.

IEEE pushes for Ethernet standard between 400Gbps and 1Tbps, hopes to head off big data crunch

Ethernet might seem passé to those of us toting Ultrabooks, but it's important enough to provoke a crisis for internet providers and many of those who depend on high-speed computing networks for a living: based on the rises of streaming video and social networking, the IEEE is worried that many of those large-scale networks will need 10Tbps of total bandwidth just to avoid a logjam in 2020. To that end, the standards body has formed a group that's mulling a new, breakneck-speed format reaching either 400Gbps or 1Tbps, depending on whose approach you'd favor. Fight the urge to pick the 1Tbps option on instinct, however.

While the whole AT&T and T-Mobile deal might be over and done with, it would appear as though Sprint is still busy fighting to gain as much market share as possible and this leaked brochure seems to prove it. Assuming the brochure is to be believed, if you were on another carrier and were looking to make the switch, Sprint will be offering you up to $400 in store credit, which in turn can be used to get yourself a new phone for free. Of course you will be tied to a new two year contract but hey, a new phone for free does sound pretty tempting.
