NASA building Space Launch System with laser melting, adapts 3D printing for the skies (video)

As we know it, 3D printing is usually confined to small-scale projects like headphones. NASA is ever so slightly more ambitious. It's using a closely related technique from Concept Laser, selective laser melting, to build elements of its Space Launch System on a pace that wouldn't be feasible with traditional methods. By firing brief, exact laser pulses at metal powder, Concept Laser's CAD system creates solid metal parts that are geometrically complex but don't need to be welded together.

BMW M offers steering wheel with integrated computer and readout

We see quite a few factory performance parts come through our inbox, but few warrant more than a cursory glance. That said, BMW grabbed our eye with its new M Performance steering wheel. Trimmed in carbon fiber and alcantara, the tiller is slick enough, but it also features two readouts to convey all sorts of vehicle information. Two color LED strips at 11 and 1 o'clock swing from green to red with engine rpm to serve as a shift light, and they can also be reconfigured to act as a drag-strip Christmas tree for timing your quarter-mile mile runs.

Hi-po Toyota GT86 to get KERS?

Hi-po Toyota GT86 to get KERS?

We happen to like the Toyota GT86 – and, it of course goes without saying that the same applies to the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S, as well – just the way it is. Yes, that includes the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine and its 200 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. That said, a little extra power never hurt anybody, right.
The most obvious way to add some punch to the GT86 would be with a turbocharger, and that has indeed long been rumored for an STI version of the BRZ. Will Toyota follow suit? According to Top Gear, the answer is no.

China Mobile's Lumia 920T packs a Snapdragon S4 Pro, better graphics performance

Buying a shiny new flagship and finding out international variants are tricked out better than yours is never much fun. Well, China Mobile has Weiboed (is that right?) that its Lumia 920T variant will pack the Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC (MSM8960T), and not the S4 Plus in the regular 920. The Pro carries the same basic CPU, and while it's not known whether the 920T will use the full 1.7GHz available (the 920's runs at 1.5GHz), the major difference is a bump from the Adreno 225 GPU to the more powerful Adreno 320.

Tab Scissors cuts your Chrome Tabs in two

Tab Scissors cuts your Chrome Tabs in two

Ever have two tabs in one Chrome Window that you want to see next to each other.  With Chrome, it's easy to drag off a tab into a seperate browser window, but it often means having to resize and re-move the windows to get them right .  Tab Scissors is a handy little extension for Chrome that helps you out. As long as there's at least two tabs open in a window, hit the Tab Scissor icon, and everything to the left and right of the current tab will be cut into two seperate windows, all neatly laid out.  Great for previewing your WordPress entry before you publish it or maybe splitting off a work and play set of tabs.

Cray unleashes 100 petaflop XC30 supercomputer with up to a million Intel Xeon cores

Cray has just fired a nuclear salvo in the supercomputer wars with the launch of its XC30, a 100 petaflop-capable brute that can scale up to one million cores. Developed in conjunction with DARPA, the Cascade-codenamed system uses a new type of architecture called Aries interconnect and Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors to easily leapfrog its recent Titan sibling, the previous speed champ. That puts Cray well ahead of rivals like China's Tianhe-2, and the company will aim to keep that edge by supercharging future versions with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors and NVIDIA Tesla GPUs.

LaCie PetiteKey USB flash drive: slim and discrete, for files of the private variety

What if the key to your home continued to get smaller and smaller. Would that be something you'd cheer or loathe. Thankfully, that's not the question we're posing today - instead, we're wondering if you'd enjoy a key-like flash drive that's smaller than its predecessor. LaCie's new PetiteKey sort of gives itself away right in the title, being even tinier than the iamaKey that shipped in March of 2009. In fact, it's some 30 percent smaller, and ships with a Wuala Secure Cloud Storage account as well.

Go Turn on “Do Not Track” on Chrome

Go Turn on “Do Not Track” on Chrome

Chrome added a Do Not Track feature to its 23rd build, released yesterday. Do Not Track is a W3C specification for browsers to add a feature that's been included in browsers like Firefox for a while. It basically tells connecting webservers that the browser doesn't want to be tracked, and it's up to the individual server whether to acknowledge that wish.

TI details the wireless power chip in the Lumia 920, offers four times the charging area

If you're one of the first on your block to have picked up a Nokia Lumia 920, you might wonder why it's so forgiving with where you set it down on the wireless charging pad. TI is more than willing to share. The 920, 820, Fatboy charging pillow and JBL PowerUp speaker all use a new TI bq500410A controller whose support for new transmitters gives it a charging area four times larger than we're used to. The 2.76 by 0.79 inches of coverage might not sound like much, but it's much wider than the previous 0.71 square inches while preserving a 70 percent efficiency and a safety cutoff if something gets in between.

Check out the first in-car install of Apple iPad Mini

Apple's iPad mini has not been on the market very long, but some aftermarket shops are already installing the tablet into a car. We saw this practice with the iPad and iPad 2, but the 7.9-inch version of the Apple product could be ideal for automotive integration. Florida-based "Soundwaves of Tampa" has become the first outfit that we know of to install the iPad Mini in a passenger car. The vehicle of choice? A 2012 Toyota Corolla. The iPad Mini was worked into the center console of the compact sedan by replacing the stereo DIN with a custom mount.

What Obama's win could mean for the auto industry over the next 4 years

What Obama's win could mean for the auto industry over the next 4 years

The 2012 Presidential election is in the books and those in swing states must be looking forward to the absence of countless campaign ads. However, those with their eyes on electric vehicles and reduced emissions from automobiles may be looking forward to what the President's second term in office has in store. So what of the future of the auto industry. Perhaps the initiative with the most immediate impact is the continued pursuit of the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standard of 54.5 miles per gallon for cars by 2025. Some dealers have voiced displeasure with the added price of making these vehicles more fuel efficient.

Sprint Nextel to drop “Nextel” from name after Softbank transaction

As some you guys might have heard, Japan's Softbank announced not too long about that they would be purchasing a majority stake in Sprint, or better known by their legal name, Sprint Nextel. While we're still unclear as to what sort of changes Softbank will be bringing about to one of the major carriers in the US and what this could ultimately mean for current Sprint customers, what we do know is that in a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission by Sprint, it looks like the company will be officially dropping the "Nextel" portion from its legal name, and will be legally known as Sprint Corporation.

Google Chrome 23 in finished form brings Do Not Track, graphics boosts for Windows users

As cutting-edge as Google can be, its Chrome browser has trailed in supporting Do Not Track by default; all its major challengers already have the option to cut off tracking cookies. At least that's where Google's fast-track development process comes in handy. Following a short beta, the stable release of Chrome 23 includes the DNT protocol to both safeguard privacy and prevent a few eerily well-targeted ads. The update is more fine-grained still with a quick drop-down menu to selectively turn off access to cameras, location and other sensitive details on a site-by-site basis.

Early next year, the traditional console giants will face a new challenger in the form of crowd-funded OUYA, and now Green Throttle Games has arrived to show you its take on the future of sofa-based gaming. Founded by familiar names such as Charles Huang of Guitar Hero fame, and Palm's Matt Crowley, the company asks why buy an expensive console when your Android phone or tablet has all the hardware you need. The idea is that not only can you play games on your touchscreen device, but when in range, hook it up to a TV, pair a couple of the Bluetooth Atlas Controllers, and have yourself a makeshift console.

Act Surprised: Hyundai, Kia sued over inflated fuel mileage ratings

You knew this was coming. Shortly after Hyundai and Kia admitted that their internal processes for calculating fuel economy were flawed, resulting in a major program to compensate drivers for lower-than-advertised mile-per-gallon numbers and the re-rating of a large percentage of the two-headed Korean automaker's vehicles, we have word of a lawsuit. There had already been a lawsuit seeking class-action status filed in California well before the admission of inflated fuel economy claims was made.
