Fingerprint sensors are so yesterday. Let's use palm and vein detection to unlock your iPhone

Fingerprint sensors are so yesterday. Let's use palm and vein detection to unlock your iPhone

Fingerprint sensors on smartphones aren't even mainstream yet, but they're about to be obsoleted nevertheless. Bigtime. Softbank, one of Japan's biggest carriers, and Universal Robot have co-developed software that will allow you to unlock your smartphone with your palm pattern and veins. No, really.

How it works is easy enough, like the image above shows. You just hold your hand in view of your device's camera (could be either rear or front-facing camera, we presume, but the latter has been demoed). Using the aforementioned software, your smartphone then checks if the palm and veins it sees really do belong to you.

Apple says Lightning to HDMI and Lightning to VGA adapters are on the way

Apple says Lightning to HDMI and Lightning to VGA adapters are on the way

There's been some confusion as to what Apple's new all-digital Lightning connector will be capable of, but the company has just cleared some of that up. An Apple spokesperson told The Verge that Lightning to HDMI and Lightning to VGA cables “will be available in the coming months.”. Originally, the fact that the $29 Lightning to 30-pin adapter doesn't support video output led to worries that the Lightning connector itself was to blame, and that Apple would steer customers who wanted to share audio and video towards wireless technologies like AirPlay.

T-Mobile prepares to do battle with the iPhone 5

. As AT&T (T), Verizon Wireless (VZ) and Sprint (S) prepare to sell as many iPhones as they can manage to get their hands on in the coming weeks, T-Mobile will once again be forced to sit on the sidelines and watch from the bench. With no LTE network to support the next-generation iPhone's new 4G connectivity and an incompatible (for the most part) 3G network, T-Mobile will once again miss out on the biggest smartphone launch of the year.

Of course, today's event wasn't just about the Fires. Amazon's still got a dog in the devoted e-reader race as well. The big news here, of course, is the company's entry into the world of lighted E Ink readers - coming several months after the release of Barnes & Noble's own Nook Simple Touch With GlowLight. The front-lit technology here is proprietary, of course. Amazon mentioned some four years in R&D on glowing alone. And the difference is pretty immediately clear: it's all about distribution.
