Not completely sold on Canon's large sensor-packing PowerShot G1 X. The company's latest jumbo compact offers a comparable smooth focus effect, thanks to its super-wide f/1.8-2.8, 28-140mm optical zoom lens, with image stabilization that boosts your shooting capability by up to four stops. The camera, which is designed to replace the G12, features a 12.1-megapixel 1x1.7-inch CMOS sensor paired with a DIGIC 5 processor, enabling RAW shooting, 1080p video and a top sensitivity of ISO 12,800 all in a body that's significant smaller and lighter than its predecessor.

Western Digital builds 5mm-thick hybrid hard drive, Ultrabook makers sign on early

Those 7mm-thick hard drives you've seen in some Ultrabooks are already looking a tad on the chunky side. Western Digital has started producing sample versions of a hybrid hard drive (you're not yet looking at it here) that measures just 5mm (0.2in) tall, even as it crams in both flash and a 500GB main disk. If you think the slimmer drive is just the ticket for a best-of-all-worlds laptop that's both fast and capacious, you're not alone: Acer and ASUS have mentioned their collaboration in the same breath, which may be a strong clue as to where future Aspires and Zenbooks are going.

Pockets…pockets…need to organise my stuff into pockets.   Nomadic is a Japanese brand of luggage that's available in the US from Jetpens, and their Nomadic CB-01 Wise Walker has pockets galore. From small pockets meant to carry your train ticket, to big pockets large enough the handle a 13″ notebook (though there's no padding so you'll really need a sleeve or cover) or an A4 file, to a hidden wallet pocket.  The CB-01 also has a strap buckle to make the pack easier to take off or wear.

Sound Taxi composes music from London city buzz, doesn't even take a fare

What you see above isn't just another shameless car stereo project, but a black cab that turns the hustle and bustle of city noise into music. The Sound Taxi toured London last week collecting ambient sound pollution with a roof-mounted mic, recycling it through production software and then pumping out real-time mixes on its army of speakers and horns. The mobile disco was a collaboration between headphone company AiAiAi and Yuri Suzuki, with Mark McKeague providing the back-end wizardry which turned clamor into samples into tracks.

Microsoft issues security patches for Flash vulnerabilities in Windows 8 and Internet Explorer

As promised, Microsoft is issuing a security patch for a Flash vulnerability on Windows 8 in Internet Explorer 10. Though the operating system has yet to see its official public release, researchers testing the RTM version found a bug that could cause Flash to crash and allow for attackers to take control of a user's machine. Additionally, the company is rolling out an update to address a security hole in Internet Explorer versions 7 and 8 on Windows XP — and IE 9 on Windows 7 and Windows Vista — which left the door open for hackers to spread malware via a specially designed Flash animation.

Onkyo shows off a few mini audio systems, one amp and Roku-ready receivers

Onkyo's CEDIA booth served as a way for it to show off all manner of new audio technology including this funky iLunar dock (above), which uses tech developed by Swiss audio company Sonic Emotion to create a "3D sound field" from stereo sources. We couldn't get much of a feel for it on the show floor with the wide open spaces and noise, but according to Onkyo, its six full-range drivers and downward-firing subwoofer combine to send sound in all directions, resulting in a stereo experience no matter where the listener is seated in smaller rooms.

LG announces quad-core Optimus G with LTE, 2GB of RAM and 13MP camera

. BGR will be covering LG's (066570) New York press conference live on Wednesday morning, but it looks like the subject of the event is no longer a mystery. LG on Tuesday took the wraps off its latest flagship Android smartphone, the LG Optimus G. Featuring a quad-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768-pixel high-definition display, 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera and a 2,100 mAh battery, the Optimus G runs LG's tweaked version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will launch next week in South Korea. U.S.
