For the first time in six years, Apple's quarterly earnings missed analyst estimates. Apple's explanation. iPhone sales slowed down as consumers entered a holding pattern in anticipation of Apple's next smartphone release. In an earnings call Tuesday afternoon, Apple blamed rumors for the drop in sales, saying that product speculation “reached extreme highs.”.
Apple reported profits of $28.27 billion this quarter, or $7.05 per share. Analysts predicted that Apple's profit per share would reach $7.31, making this the first “disappointing” quarter in the company's past 64.

Patent suggests Apple may have planned ‘iPhone nano'

. Rumors of an iPhone nano are almost as old as the iPhone itself: the first such mumblings began in 2008. Now, Patently Apple suggests that Apple definitely was once, or still is, considering a smaller version of the iPhone. The patent in question shows a device with multiple inputs and hardware buttons or LED lights that would allow a user to interact with the phone. Given the touchscreen technology used in today's iOS devices, we suspect this patent from 2006 would no longer reflect what an “iPhone nano” might look like.

Sure, it's not the quickest way to locate a title amongst tens of thousands of books, but perhaps it'll offer up some small consolation for those who miss browsing real-life bookstores.

RIM announces BBX - the new platform for phones and tablets

Quite expectedly RIM has just announced its new platform called BBX. BBX combines "the best of BlackBerry and the best of QNX", as RIM puts it. The new BBX-OS based on this BBX platform will be for both smartphones and tablets, and will offer support for apps developed for the previous BlackBerry OS 6 and OS 7, but also Adobe Air and Flash apps, HTML 5 or even for Android apps thanks to the BlackBerry Runtime for Android software module. The BBX-OS compatibility with OS 6x7 apps is possible, but its native SDK will be much more powerful and flexible to build anything you may want.

Motorola announces Motoactv, 'the ultimate fitness device'

It's official, Motorola's just officially unveiled Motoactv (not to be confused with these guys), its very own music and fitness device. The little running mate sports a 600MHz processor, runs Android and weighs a healthy 35 grams. It'll apparently track your heart rate, and log running, walking and cycling statistics, and packs GPS to track your exercise routes. The Nike+ competitor is unsurprisingly sweat and waterproof and can hold up to 4,000 songs. It also offers FM radio and audio "coaching," which updates on pace and distance, for those who need a little inspiration in their routine.
