So you are pretty smug with your latest DSLR that crams in far more megapixels than you ever imagined, but as usual, the big boys over at the military have a toy that is far superior to what you hold in the palm of your hands. In fact, scientists over at Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) have every intention of coming up with high powered scopes and cameras for soldiers and Marines to use in the battlefield, where these are touted to be up to 2,000 times more powerful compared to current imaging capabilities. In fact, a recent test showcase the camera's ability to read signs and license plates up to 270 yards away.

US Army tests female body armor in Afghanistan

Sometime in July earlier this year, we ran a story on how the US Army was working on a new body armor that was specially developed to fit the female body, which is definitely a good idea since the male and female physiological make-up are different in their own unique ways. Having said that, female soldiers from Fort Campbell who are deploying to Afghanistan will have the honor of field testing the first Army body armor which was specially tailored to fit women's physiques, being shorter in nature.

There may not be much mystery left surrounding the IdeaTab S2110, but Lenovo's making it official at IFA anyhow. The hybrid slate, first shown off at this past CES as the IdeaTab S2, now has a new name, but aside from that not much has changed since we saw it creep onto the company's site. The 10.1-inch convertible, outfitted with a 1280 x 800 IPS display capable of 420 nits of brightness, runs a skinned version of Android 4.0 atop Qualcomm's dual-core 8060A CPU clocked at 1.5GHz and packs a dual 1.3-megapixel front facing / 5-megapixel rear camera setup, as well as support for WCDMA / EVDO, Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi.

The LG Escape, which we saw leaked out yesterday, is now official on AT&T. We can expect to see the budget-friendly smartphone available on September 16th for $50 with a new two-year commitment. It features a 4.3-inch qHD true-color IPS screen, Ice Cream Sandwich, a 5MP rear camera with 1080p video recording, NFC, a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU and LTE. It also features 4GB onboard storage with microSD expansion, an above-average 2,150mAh battery, Bluetooth 4.0, a 1.3MP front-facing camera and a new feature called Skyfire Horizon, which is a browser toolbar extension that promises fast access to social media pages.

HTC Windows Phone 8X photo and video samples surface

The HTC Windows Phone 8X is still hot off the announcement stage and we weren't hoping for camera samples to appear so early. The new smartphone is touted for its 8 megapixel camera with a backside illuminated sensor, wide f/2.0 aperture and 28mm wide viewing angle, so we were quite excited to see some real-life shots. From the looks of it, the HTC Windows Phone 8X delivers some sharp photos, though the noise suppression clearly leaves its marks on the really fine detail.

The world is no stranger to flexible batteries, but they've almost always had to be made in thin sheets — that doesn't amount to a long running time if you're powering anything more than a watch. LG Chem has developed a flexible lithium-ion battery that's not just better-suited to our bigger gadgets but could out-do previous bendable energy packs. Researchers found that coating copper wires with nickel-tin and coiling them briefly around a rod results in a hollow anode that behaves like a very strong spring; mating that anode with a lithium-ion cell leads to a battery that works even when it's twisted up in knots.

Vizio's CinemaWide 21:9 HDTVs hit physical store shelves, price slides below $2k

While Philips is backing out of the ultrawidescreen game, it appears Vizio is still trying to move at least a few more units. The company announced that its 58-inch CinemaWide HDTVs have moved from being available exclusively online, to the physical store shelves of Costco and Sam's Club stores.
