Why everyone loses but the lawyers in Toyota's unintended acceleration settlement

Why everyone loses but the lawyers in Toyota's unintended acceleration settlement

The Toyota settlement recently submitted to US District Judge James Selna for approval will cost the company anywhere from $1 billion to $1.4 billion. All to settle the class-action suit brought against it for economic losses stemming from claims of unintended acceleration. This suit only addresses the perceived loss-of-value that Toyota owners and lessees feel they have suffered, alleging their cars were the victims of unintended depreciation even if they did not directly suffer from the alleged cases of unintended/sudden acceleration.

Jumbled Text Messages Could Be Indicative Of A Stroke

We've all seen funny screen captures where the autocorrect function of our smartphones results in rather embarrassing and unintended messages, but at the same time it looks like maybe the next time you receive a jumbled text message, there is a slight chance that this could be indicative that the sender could be having a stroke. According to a report, a man in Boston received a couple of text messages from his wife where he could not understand what she was trying to say.

Skyrim Dragonborn DLC For PS3 Coming Early 2013

The Skyrim Dragonborn downloadable content (DLC) which has been seen by many to be stillborn, does seem to have a fair shot at arriving on the PS3 platform sometime early next year, and this bit of information came from the folks over at Bethesda themselves. The game developer is said to be hard at work to deliver Dawnguard and Hearthfire to the PS3 platform, too. In fact, a day before the Skyrim Dragonborn DLC arrived for Xbox LIVE, Bethesda mentioned in an update on their official blog by dropping hints that the DLC's release date for the PS3 is early next year.

Generate Your WiFi Password As A QR Code

Now here is a story that you might just want to live it out, especially when you have an organization or do invite plenty of friends over to your place often. Since we live in a mostly wireless environment these days, folks would definitely ask, "May I have your WiFi password please?" A Reddit user decided to do something about this situation, and has "enlisted" the help of QR codes to get the job done. In particular, an extremely large QR code that is subsequently printed out and framed, so that you can just let them use their smartphone app to scan and enter the code themselves.

Google Removes 2 Billion Fake Views On YouTube

With 2013 just around the corner, Google is starting early with its resolution to remove millions of fake views on its popular video streaming service, YouTube. According to Daily Dot, around 2 billion fake views were removed from YouTube channels belonging to Sony/ BMG, Universal Music Group, and RCA Records, following reports of black hat view count-building techniques. These techniques required using unethical search engine optimization tactics that increases view counts. For example, Tapangoldy, a 16-year-old seller of YouTube views, uses Fiverr as a conduit for his services.

Astroboy (Roboy) A Future Possibility?

Astroboy (Roboy) A Future Possibility?

Humanity is still very far from coming up with a robot that is so intelligent, it could function in the same way that we see C3-PO and Sonny (from I, Robot fame) interact. Well, this does not mean that we are not going to try (and hopefully, not die trying). A team from Switzerland has taken it up upon themselves to create a humanoid looking robot that intends to come in the form of a realistic robot boy. Known as Roboy, it was developed by the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory of the University of Zurich, and comes across as a tendon-driven humanoid robot which will share a similar physical size as that of a human four year old.

We've seen renderings of the device before, but if you're curious as to how it might look like in real life, photos of the Ascend D2 handset have been caught on camera (via IT Home). Unfortunately these are not full body shots so we guess we will have to wait for more leaks or the official unveiling to see more of it. In the meantime hopefully these photos will be enough to give you guys a basic idea of what to expect.

Norman, OK Chevy dealer sells rather than selling out

Just like any other retail store, car dealerships are as much about branding as they are about selling products. So when Marc Heitz decided to design his Chevrolet franchise to resemble more of an outdoor enthusiast store rather than a conventional Chevy dealer, General Motors stepped in by stopping payment of quarterly dealer bonuses to the tune of $250,000 each. Now, Automotive News is reporting that rather than redesigning the store or losing an estimated $1 million per year in bonuses, Heitz has instead sold his franchise to a cross-town rival, David Stanley Chevrolet.

Samsung reportedly plans to ship 510 million phones in 2013

We know that Samsung has recently beat Nokia as being the top phone maker of 2012, and it looks like they have no plans of slowing down in 2013. According to a report from The Korea Times, they claim that based on their source who is supposedly an executive at one of Samsung's key supplies, Samsung has plans to ship more than half a billion mobile devices in 2013 - 510 million to be exact. This is definitely an increase over 2012 where Samsung targeted 420 million. Out of the 510 million, a whopping 390 million will be smartphones alone which means that Samsung is pretty sure that their new smartphones will be hits.

This. doesn't seem right, but just bear with this report from Wired. It seems as though driving over speed bumps can reveal those who are enduring acute appendicitis. This was a rumored thing among medical circles based purely on anecdotal data, but now there is an empirical study by the University of Oxford and Stoke Mandeville Hospital in the UK to back it up.
Apparently, when attempting to diagnose appendicitis, some doctors would ask if pain worsened when driving over speed bumps. It was not exact medicine, but according to Dr.

iOS 6 Increased Adoption Rate Due To China iPhone 5 Launch, Not Google Maps

It was a little over a week when Google Maps was re-released onto iOS, was on top of the App Store and earned itself over 10 million downloads in the first 48 hours of its availability, and because of that, mobile ad company MoPub deemed it being the sole reason why iOS 6 adoption grew 29%. But it seems that report may have been a inaccurate as other factors outside of Google Maps being made available probably weren't considered in MoPub's report. Last week didn't only mark the release of Google Maps, but it also marked the official release of the iPhone 5 in China, which comes pre-loaded with iOS 6.

Judging from the image above, which shows the spacesuit's large hemispherical transparent dome and classic white suit with bright green stripes on it, it interestingly bears a passing resemblance to the fictional character in the Toy Story franchise – Buzz Lightyear.
