Just today, the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Apple which showed off a new fault monitoring battery system. According to Apple, the fault-monitoring mechanism is capable of generating an alert and/or disable use of a portable electronic device that holds the battery pack. Imagine the fault-monitoring mechanism indicating the fault via a visual alert such as a color-changing mechanism, or through an audible alarm. Not only that, it also touched on Apple's Audio Jack Assemblies patent, but that is another story for a different day.
