[Opinion] What an ideal smartwatch should be like

[Opinion] What an ideal smartwatch should be like

Smartwatches seem like all the rage right now, and I am extremely excited about the future of them and wearable computing in general. I have spent about a year using the Motorola MOTOACTV, and it has become almost as close to me as my phone. My primary use case for the device is that of a fitness tracking device, but what I really wanted to do was explore the possibilities regarding how such a watch should work. The key advantage that the smartwatch platform brings is giving developers the capability to add another key element to the experience their mobile apps provide.

Xbox 360 Welcomes Time Warner Cable Live TV App Later This Summer

Video game consoles have a wide variety of options users can choose from that provide streaming video services on the fly. The Xbox 360, for example, has Netflix, Hulu and even a FiOS app that allows its users, who are subscribers to the cable provider, to be able to watch live TV from a small selection of channels. It looks like another cable provider will be throwing their app into the Xbox 360 ring as Time Warner Cable has announced it will be releasing its TWC TV app onto the console later this summer. . The TWC TV app will deliver up to 300 channels for Xbox 360 owners who also  are Xbox Live Gold members.

VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris

VW Golf GTI wrung out by Chris Harris

Enthusiasts like nothing more than to crucify modern interpretations of their favorite performance models for failing to live up to some imagined ethos. Even the Volkswagen GTI has suffered its fair share of slings and arrows for growing in size and curb weight. Chris Harris recently spent some time with the all-new MK VII GTI to find out if growing up means giving up on what makes the machine so special. Judging by his comments, Harris certainly doesn't think so. Yes, the new GTI is considerably more comfortable than its predecessors, but that's hardly a bad thing.

In case you haven't been keeping up with the CyanogenMod team (by following their blog or Google+ account), the team has released CyanogenMod 10.1.0 stable for a plethora of devices. Nearly all of the devices which got release candidates and milestone releases have gotten a stable version, so if your device fell under that category you'll want to check Get.CM for your download. Unfortunately, one big group of users is being left out of the fun. Specifically, those with phones based on Exynos 4 are being told that builds for that suite of devices will remain at nightly status indefinitely.

HTC One launches in Glamour Red, available exclusively at Phones4U in the UK

Well, I guess HTC can stop pretending that there is no red HTC One now. The company has just revealed that the phone would be headed to the United Kingdom in a new color — Glamour Red — and that those who want it would only be able to get it from one place. That place is popular retailer Phones4U. This edition of the HTC One is the same as every other non-Chinese version, though we aren't sure whether or not this particular model will come in standard 32GB flavoring or the more sweet 64GB.
Exclusivity in the United Kingdom doesn't mean the phone has no chance of making it anywhere else, though.

Jaguar turns down offers to join V8 Supercars, questions AMG, Volvo participation

Rumors have swirled in recent weeks that Jaguar may be the next manufacturer to join the V8 Supercars racing series, made popular in Australia but now well-known in other parts of the world as well. Sadly, Jag's participation is not to be. In fact, it would be "insane," according to Jaguar Land Rover Asia Pacific Managing Director David Blackhall, for it to accept either of the two offers it has received to bring Jaguar into V8 Supercars. Not only is Jaguar not interested in entering V8 Supercars, says Blackhall, it also fails to understand the recent entries from AMG and Volvo.

Japanese Robots: Yaskawa Motoman Opens Shop in China; Shudder the Labor Market?

Of planet Earth's estimated 1,240,000 operational industrial robots, about 230,000 were made in Japan and sold around the world by Yaskawa Motoman. Earlier this week, they opened their first overseas factory in China, which means that the Chinese are building robots for the Japanese in China to sell to China. It's totally meta. · · ·

The Robots:
Those who like robots but live their lives outside of industrial robo-geekery probably know Yaskawa Motoman not by name, but by the YouTube footprint of various machines dealing cards, making food, playing golf, assembling stuff, stacking stuff, etc.

NVIDIA Shield Delayed Due To "Mechanical Issue"

NVIDIA has just announced that it will delay the shipment of its SHIELD Android game console to “July” (from June 27) as it has found a mechanical issue in (what is probably) the first batch of product. According to NVIDIA, a “3rd party” component is the root cause. We don't know anything about the severity of the problem but since NVIDIA builds all the critical components, it can't be that bad. Also, the term “mechanical” would indicate that it has something to do with the body rather than the electronics, which is always reassuring.

Samsung officially announces Galaxy S4 with LTE-Advanced

Samsung informally mentioned that it was working on bringing a version of its Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone with LTE-Advanced radios to market, but they just made things a bit more official with today's press release. Samsung is calling it the world's first commercially-available smartphone with LTE-A, and they claim it is capable of reaching speeds of up to double of what is possible today. Of course, actually reaching those speeds would require a carrier that has deployed an LTE-Advanced infrastructure, something most carriers will look to do in the months and years to come.

Foursquare Gives Your Friends The Power To Check You In

Foursquare users have been tagging themselves to anywhere and everywhere they please over the years, but one feature many people have been wanting ever since the application was launched was the ability to check in your friends if you all happen to be at the same place. Foursquare has certainly noticed as over 90% of mentions typically include a person you're currently with, and today, they're allowing people to check in their friends. The process of checking in your friends is easy as you'll first check into whatever it is you and your friends are doing, then proceed to tap the “I'm with...” option to add people you're with.

Wells Fargo has just announced earlier this morning that their customers now have a choice to receive receipts over a text message whenever they perform a transaction that warrants a receipt at one of the company's own automated teller machines (ATMs). Of course, there is always the old school choice of having your receipts be printed out at the ATM, or if you have a heart to reduce the consumption of paper, how about having the statement emailed to your on-file email address.

Garmin announces $700 outdoor GPS unit running Android

Garmin was quickly chased out of the Android smartphone game when it tried to release a bevy of Nuvi-branded smartphones in conjunction with ASUS, but the navigation company has decided to give Android another go. The catch is it's not a phone this time — it's a standalone GPS unit called the Garmin Monterra. And it costs $650 (or $700 if you want world maps). That's quite a steep price considering the device doesn't house cellular radios. It has your standard suite of sensors and connectivity features otherwise, including Bluetooth, WiFi, NFC and Ant+.

Buick celebrates 110 years by naming most significant model of each decade

In May of 1903, Buick began work on its first vehicle, the 1904 Model B, the first example of which was sold to a doctor in Flint, Michigan. That first sale was appropriate since later on, Buick became known as a "doctor's car." The Model B is the first of 11 cars chosen by Buick to highlight each decade of the company's 110-year history. The 1916 D-45 Touring with a six-cylinder engine was Buick's highest seller that year, and helped push overall sales past six figures for the first time, making Buick the top-selling automotive brand. In 1931, Series 50 got an eight-cylinder engine, which helped the company survive the Great Depression.

Get the world's thinnest portable mobile charger in the Jackery Air

When I first saw the Jackery Air on Kickstarter , I thought it looked like every other portable charger. That is, until the picture of it side by side with the iPhone 5 came up. This charger is as thin as the iPhone 5 and looks to be nearly the same width and height as well, with one end tapering down to nearly half the thickness of an iPhone 5. Delving deeper, the Jackery Air comes in two models: the 2800 mAh and 5000 mAh. Both are orange and weigh around 5 ounces apiece.  When not in use, the Jackery Air claims to hold its charge for 6 months. The lightweight aluminum frame provides durability without sacrificing weight.
